Dan, hi. I don't use pain medication or anti-biotics, except for Novocaine when I go to the dentist and sometimes when I get stitches but that's it. Never have once in my life and I've been through lots of emergencies.

As for the pen, yeah I'm going into space! SUL is easy there ;) Anyway it's for the usual filling out of trail surveys and leaving the odd note on trail head bulletin boards.

That is quite a list! I only have two items that are lighter then yours. My large Smartwool Utralight Cycling socks weigh 1.4oz, and my Heineken pot weighs 1.2oz. If you add in the savings from the new BPL head net, you'll save a whopping 1oz :). I agree with most of your choices, except the first aid and sleeping pad. I wish I could sleep comfortably on something that light. I also think some storm proof matches are a must. I am curious about the modifications to your Snow Peak 700 mug. Was it you that posted about removing the handles and the welded on plate? Did you shorten the mug as well?

p.s. Thanks for your post on the titanium stake handled, spoon, fork, and toothbrush. I made one a few days ago. I'll post a picture shortly.

Seriously... if he wants to be all natural and use herbal arnica (almond oil and ground arnica flowers) instead of other pain tabs (even natural ones like, oh say, aspirin) then let him be a hippie or a hardass, whatever his drive.

However, NSAIDs are really usefull for swelling control, anaglesic properties nonwithstanding, and many offer fever control. Aspirin is a NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammitory drug).

Refusal of antibiotic ointment is just silly in an environment where it is very hard to keep very clean anyway. It is a majorly light and safe thing to have (get a double antibiotic if you are worrying about allergies to triples). A little bit of antibiotics might save you from a lot of hurt and trouble. But that is OK... you have tee tree oil... I read all about it on http://www.inhalationproducts.com

OK on a serious note... what kind of iodine is that you have? Tincture of iodine or Providone-iodine (Betadine)?

The homemade/modded gear is cool sounding.

Eric, hi there. Cool on the toothbrush, can't wait to see a pic. Yeah I did the earlier mod on the 700 mug, and then decided I only really needed 20 oz capacity max, so I cut off the top leaving room for 20 oz. I actually really like it because it is very short and has a wider base than a 600 mug or other ti mug, which gives it a lower center of gravity. It's more flimsy up top without the rolled edge, but much more svelte.

Summit Co, it's providone iodine in a little glass vial.

My newest SUL piece of gear, but I'm not sure how to pack it? Does it go near the top of the pack or bottom?

I'd imagine that straps to the outside of your pack fairly easily.
