Am I the only person who has had to resort to Googling an acronym in a particular thread to completely understand what is being said?

There should be a rule for the benefit of those of us that are "acronym" challenged.

The rule should read as follows.

"At least once in the posting of a new thread each poster should in plain language state what the letters of whatever acronym is used actually mean in said post".

I hereby define the acronym TOTBAR as "there ought to be a rule". :-)

Yes, every so often I have to look one up.
Also I must remind myself not to take them too literally, so LOL now really means a mild chuckle and nobody really does ROFLMAO .

Interesting to me is when an acronym becomes a word and we all forget the origin of it , like laser, (L.A.S.E.R.)scuba, snafu, radar

This is how mad they can get....I work for a global company who has an internal search web application called "CHAOS" (it too is an acronym, but telling you would tell you where I work). CHAOS is used specifically for acronym searches that we have internally and within the industry.

Cool, nice to see another Niven fan out there. I usually don't come over to the chaff side, but that drew me in.

TANSTAAFL. Always thought it was some russian word until I read "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" by Heinlen. Great story, that.

Oh, and Heinlein is some good stuff.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently
and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
