This song instantly made me think of being all alone at dusk high up in the Eastern Sierra.

Anybody else got a favorite they associate with being outside and free?

I don't hike with an ipod or such and wondered if I did carry it what music I would listen to. I don't think it get's any better than listening to the music nature provides. Therefore I can't get myself to carry any music. Also, I recently went on a BP trip with my wife. It was her first time. I was putting together a slideshow but could not find a song to accompany the slideshow that would do the trip justice. Curious to see others chime in.

I've found that some creeks have music coming out of them. Or voices. Or choirs. It can be a little creepy but I enjoy it.

I'm not much of a musical consumer. I like to make music. So I usually have some tunes going through my head. I have brought a pennywhistle in the past so I could play various Irish tunes. But they are loud instruments so last time I brought a Strumstick. Strumsticks are heavy and large (compared to whistles) but quieter. I had a great time playing old-time American tunes.

The wilderness is surprisingly noisy except on my last trip I hiked up to a high alpine lake and noticed there was not a sound at all. No running water, no birds or anything. It was amazing. The most moving "music" yet!

. . . almost 40 years ago, I was stuck on a BPing/ hiking trip with my very traditional/ provincial inlaws (parents, brother and sister inlaws, etc.).

Around the campfire, one of them began to sing, "Kum bay ah, Lord, Kum bay ah . . ." (sorry, if I'm getting the spelling wrong).

When it came my turn, I sang, sweetly, quietly, " Throwing up, Lord, Kum bay ah. Getting sick, Lord, Kum bay ah. Blowing lunch, Lord, Kum bay ah. Oh, Lord, Kum bay ah."

A few minutes later, I said, "Come on let's sing a REAL camp song: 'I met a gin sot bar-room queen in Memphis, DA, DA, DAH. Come on, EVERYBODY now . . . ."'" and they just broke up into laughter.

I don't do sh*t like that anymore. Shame on me.

Apologies to those who don't recognize the old Rolling Stones tune,

As long as you keep it to yourself, whatever floats your boat.

My favorite hiking instrument? Native American flute. Dr. Hal makes a plastic one that is nearly indestructible and sounds great--- for $25 and 3.5oz. http://www.soundswemake.com/pages/native.html

Harmonicas make sense. I've seen a fireside percussion "drum circle" session break out on pots and pans. Clapping and song are 100% portable and *very* UL.

But all should be respectful of anyone in the area. There's enough noise pollution in our day to day life without torturing others with your "taste" in the hills.

I got a couple of walkin' buddies who bring ukeleles and harmonicas. I'm a guitar picker, but won't bring a full size instrument, of course. I haven't even found a travel guitar that I liked - although the small body/short scale Corts look pretty good. I compromised by packing a cheap baritone ukelele
that is tuned to the first 4 strings on a regular guitar. I used to pack it in a double garbage bag case but the branches have shredded that good. I've bought some lightweight Denier nylon. That should make a nice lightweight case. I don't bring this on every walk either. Just short or easy/family type walks. Regards, Charlie.

The sounds of silence -- actual silence on 10/04/2010 05:48:14 MDT Print View

I too go for the sound of silence ... the relative silence of the wild.

A little wind or water sound is also quite nice.

One of those small electronic players with a small pair of speakers with crappy substandard distorted audio does not qualify as "music".

There are others who rush to get such units setup to "help others have a good time" in camp. Evidently, there is such a strong need for music that even miserably reproduced music is better than listening to nature.

If someone setup music near where I was camping, I would pack up and move away, but first I would tell them why I'm moving. Wear your mp3 player if you want music (I don't), but please don't inflict in on others who may a) hate your choice of music or b) just prefer the sounds of non-human nature. (or c) have to turn their mp3 up load to overcome your music).

The sound of Jazz in camp is a beautiful thing!! on 10/05/2010 13:37:13 MDT Print View

I ALWAYS listen to music on the trail and in camp--I really enjoy a little background music in camp in the afternoon...Not loud just enough so you can here it..Especially on long hikes it breaks up the monity of doing 15 miles in a day over and over.. On the trail a good tune will definitely inspire me to walk faster!!Rhythm and Beat-Rhythm and Beat..For me music and nature go hand in hand. I also enjoy the sounds of nature and socializing on the trail but some times you need a little inspiration like Incubus, Tool and the Foo Fighters and do not forget Radiohead and Miles Davis in camp around the fire---Sweet!!!!!!!! You peolpe are missing out-I'm telling ya....

Interesting music news...

Dave Grohl was recently enjoying the finer moments of a Scissor Sisters concert when frontman Jake Shears stripped to his skivvies and suddenly too many members appeared on stage.

Grohl will bring everything to a screeching halt by threatening a lawsuit that will “derail the tour, bankrupt the band and disappoint fans.”

A tearful Grohl spoke on the Scissor Sister's website via special report video saying he’s been a fan for a long time and went to their gig where all was fine, band sounded great until things started to get hot. Very hot.

I love music, listening or making it, and I love the sounds of nature, or simple silence. It's allllll goooood. I definitely appreciate the mp3 devices, but they have their time and place.

Was watching a sunset 3 or 4 days into a solo journey this summer, with some heavy stuff going on in my brain from back in the real world. Was at Monarch lakes in Sequoia after coming over a couple passes from the 5 lakes area. The day ended with a beautiful view down a canyon and this song was just speaking to me with the view I had. It was talking about the clouds and the golden sunset and the river while speaking directly of these things I was dealing with. Then it unleashed this 30 minute jam that peaked and brought me to this all encompassing pure bliss moment of clarity. A simultanious physical mental and spiritual bliss that built up brought on by the combo of the tunes and the sunset. The chorus is just "we want you to be happy" over and over again, and it seemed like everything would be alright. Then I turn around...I might have even been laughing, I saw the first person I had seen in 3 days. I was really suprised, and ripped back to reality from that fleeting feeling. I think I fumbled a few words, but wasn't very polite, and too bad, it was a beautiful woman, also solo :P

There is just a time and a place. Usually it is at night.

"Portugal, the Man" is a band I love to listen to while relaxing in the wilderness. They're from Alaska....go figure. Give the album "Censored Colors" a try, I bet you like it.

I, too, prefer to listen to the sounds of nature while in the woods. But while back in "civilization" several songs remind me of being in the woods:

Ted Nugent: Fred Bear
Les Stroud: Snow Shoes and Solitude?
John Smith: Scotch Pine
Crash Test Dummies: In the days of the caveman
Taj mahal: Fishin' Blues
Slaid Cleaves: Breakfast in Hell
The Band: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Judy Collins: The Blizzard
Guy Davis: I'm Gone
Blue Highway: Clear Cut
Kate Campbell: Bury me in bluegrass

Native American music also reminds me of being in the woods. Native Radio is a good, free online station playing native music. There was a song I heard on there whose lyrics cut straight down to the bone:

"my heart it beats to a native drum
it's time to tell the truth how the east and west were won"

I'll take any of the below albums when relaxing in camp after a long day of hiking.

Any of Air's albums could be appropriate but I'll take the classic Moon Safari Air - La Femme D'Argent

Charlie Haden and Pat Methenys Album Beyond the Missouri Ski. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress in particular.

Dave Brubeck Fujiyama off his album Impressions of Japan.

I think we need another thread for what you would listen when you need some special motivation to grind out more miles or attack some long switchbacks.

Good to see Aphex Twin and Air references amongst the calls for bluegrass and only babbling brooks. For around camp, lots of good weird glitchy electronic music is always good.

And I agree that another thread on music to motivate one on the long uphill slogs at the end of the day is in order. Pogues! Glitch Mob! Rancid! Stanton Warriors!

If solo or relatively quiet campmates, nothing but Natures own sounds like the above.

When faced snorers or crowded camp, out comes the iPod (mostly from the 90's reliving the 20-30's (zoiks!! - Temple of the Dog was about 2 decades ago) and 70's from what I recollect from elementary/ junior high days ... the 80's were pretty much a bust. 60's way too old for me).

ADD: Not sure about being one with the wilderness when others are sawing logs - I just want some sleep.

I very rarely listen to music during the day while backpacking or doing a day hike to a summit, but I do take my Ipod. Again, rarely, while I am traversing a ridge up in the alpine zone, if I am alone, during a break, if the view is stunning and clear, I will listen to Blind Faith "Presence of the Lord" or the version from Clapton and Winwood at Madison Sq. Garden. I may be getting old--but I still rock!

And I must admit that if I'm camping alone, some evenings after a couple of shots of tequila, I will put on the pod.

But mostly I love the quiet, the songs of distant birds, the sound of wind rustling the leaves or roaring, and those rare moments of absolute silence. For me, this is the Presence of the Lord.

Piper S., Daniel Martinez, and the few others who find that the real music nature makes is better than any imitation, I knew there were a few hikers on these forums I'd actually like to meet on the trail, you guys sound like you'd be some of them.

Piper, if I can make a small suggestion, next time you hear the stream singing or talking, don't get creeped out, try joining the conversation/song. You might be very surprised by the outcome. The longer you stay at the spot the better the outcome, especially if the spot has been used for thousands of years by people.

I was stupid enough to bring my music player on my recent Big Sur trip, and I'm never doing that again, nothing on it was able to present even the palest imitation of the real music I got to hear. On the other hand, at Point Reyes, which is a very impacted, not very wild location, the music was nice at night now and then.

With that said, allow me a quick rant: I passed some clueless young guy hiking down a mountain in Big Sur, that is major rattle snake country. He was listening to an ipod or whatever. Ie, when the rattler politely alerts the approaching entity that it's time to stop, by rattling, this person would be unable to hear that warning in time, get bitten, then, were I to come along to him, I'd be put into the position of having to hike out to get him help, all because his addiction to auditory stimulation of an artificial type. This is a grotesquely irresponsible act, and totally selfish since it's putting others into the position of having to ruin their trip due to his idiotic decision to crank some tunes to help pass the time. Same goes for many other sounds the trail can give as warnings that might give you that second edge to react via hearing.

Ok, rant over, but please people, don't be foolish, if you are going through terrain where you need to hear sounds to protect yourself (in my opinion, that's all terrain, urban, rural, wilderness), do not wear headphones/ear buds, that's just not smart. And if you do, and you get a bite, or whatever, don't expect others to ruin their trips for your sake, and if you do, you'd better have the decency to offer major compensation to the person you force to help you because of your bad decision making, ie, pay for my next week trip etc..

Mark Primack , I missed your comments too, couldn't have put it better myself. I have only used these music players 2 times now in my life backpacking, and I don't plan in general on using them again, unless going to a place that just doesn't have 'the presence of the Lord' as you put it so nicely, ie, too human impacted. Don't miss the daily conversations going on around you, the birds, the animals, everything. I have a great music collection, at least in my opinion, and a great stereo, and I love music, but only because I need it because I live in an urban area, far away from real music.

Seeing as i'm on a roll, i may as well post a third tune. This is a traditional old folk tune. MacPherson was a very naughty boy, and paid the ultimate penalty. Legend says he broke his fiddle over his knee on the gallows, rather than have anyone else play it. This tune and words were taken from the gallows before he took the drop.
