I'm new to the backpacking world, i live in California and really want to get out there and do an overnight-er. i have plenty of gear, just not sure if i need a permit, or where to go, or if its legal to camp in national forests in California, or where to park. could some one please give me some info on this?

I live in long beach... I was thinking about the Angeles National Forest. Really just want to go anywhere and test my gear.

Perfectly legal to camp in the national forests. Angeles is a great place to start. You have many great areas down there to keep you busy for some time. Go to A16 or REI and look at the guidebooks for some better idea for what is around you. Have fun out there.
