I am currently section hiking the AT in NH, while also peakbagging the 48 4000'ers in NH. Due to my goals, I am running into quite a few people on the trail, especially this past holiday weekend.
I was very surprised to see so many northbound ATers with obviously heavy packs, not just the make and model, but the actual weight of their pack as well. I saw at least 3 Kelty packs that I know weigh more than 5 lbs each, and hiked for a short while with a woman with an older EMS pack that weighed a ton. Many were carrying their sleeping pads as opposed to using it as a frame, and I also saw several hikers that had such large packs, I had a hard time figuring what they could be carrying to fill such large spaces...food I guess, but 6000 ci?
I did see some Granite Gear packs, (1 each Virga, Ozone and Vapor Trail) but for the most part, I came away feeling kinda bad for folks who were just struggling and I wanted to help in some way, but couldn't.
