John, that is a lot of words for a Taoist. Lao Tzu would be unmoved.

How about:

Carry not carry

P.S. I know your quotes by heart. No offense meant.

You need for life on the trail
Leave the rest behind

I like it :-)

Up I go, sweating
With little vigor I think
Dump half of this junk

Who Cares? on 07/06/2010 22:54:51 MDT Print View

Let me preface this:

I really hope this doesn’t come out "jerkish" or unkind.

But who cares?!! Isn't the information within more valuable than a silly mantra? I mean, really, it just seems silly to me. I'd rather be thinking about other things than BPL's motto or "pledge". Granted we're on the net filling our spare time but it just seems weird.

Maybe it's me, but the content seems far more important than "One bandana is worth 11 and 3/4 fleece jackets".

Again, I don’t want to come across rude (even though I may have been brash), and would readily love to share the trail with any one of you but this just doesn't appeal to me.

Isn’t the moment far more valuable than fixating on the unessential?

"fixating on the unessential..."

i hate to break it to you, but that's about 95% of what occurs on BPL.

Exactly..... people are just being goofy and having fun. You should try some Haiku, it's fun. Plus there are plenty of threads on this site I don't like, I just don't read them.

>But who cares?

Many of the discussions on this board come down to this. That's why I thought the motto was:
HYOH Lighter.

I hate the imperative voice. on 07/20/2010 11:59:01 MDT Print View

Well, there's a tagline under the BPL wordmark: 'Pack Less. Be More.' Which reminds me of how much I hate just about all taglines that tell me what to do or be or feel. I spend a lot of time thinking about this stuff as part of my work (how's that for fixating on the unessential?!)

What about:

The relentless pursuit of weightlessness

Further. Faster. Higher. Lighter.

Is it worth the weight?

This has been fun. Even to see the negative posts. When I used BPL in my original post I forgot it was the abreveation of this sight so some of you took me too seriously. I have seen "Pack Less. Be More." It is a great motto. But I am trying to suck kids and parents into this focus. So, though, mottos may be un needed for some. They help the kids. Keep them coming. These are great.

"fixating on the unessential" on 07/25/2010 00:15:08 MDT Print View

a whole tooth brush... unessential
tertiary fire starting backup lighter for your backup fire starter... unessential
extra tarp shelter to replace your extra shelter in case your bivy leaks inside of your bomber 6lb tent... unessential
spoon and a fork... unessential
shaving three grams off of your ten gram stove... totally sweet!!
fixating on the unessential is the best motto i have ever heard for this site.
