I'm looking for something like this http://www.gpsxchange.com that is more focused on hiking/backpacking. That site seems to be more focused on motorcylce/atv trails.

It's a place where people can post there GPS tracklogs. I find it's much more accurate to get a tracklog from someone that has actually hiked the trail then to rely on a trail map. Especially if you can't find a trail map for the trail you want to hike.

One place to look if you haven't already is LocalHikes.com - The hike reporters all use National Geographic's TOPO software and you can download the .tpo file with (usually) the actual track hiked.

everytrail.com has some gps tracks also.

Ive been using EveryTrail for about a year now and I love it. Not only does it display your GPS tracks in brilliant form it allows you to import photos either directly or from your Flickr/Picasaweb account and place them on the maps. Trips are categorized by activity and there's a focus on human powered trips.

Number of trips posted for the following activities:

In the North West we have a great resources that I hope will take off in other areas as well. The North West Trails Project started a couple years ago to allow folks in the area to send gps tracks to a guy that is building a transparent overlay map for Garmin Mapsorce. We email him a track of a hike and he loads them into a map that can then be downloaded and viewed in mapsorce and can then be loaded back into everyone's garmin gps. It makes finding and following new trails easy and you have thousands of them loaded. I put them on my hand held and on the car gps so that we can drive right to the trail head in new areas.

EveryTrail looks like it is getting much more user friendly since the last time I looked at it a few years ago. But still not many folks in my area using it so not many tracks yet.

which gps devices are guys using? Im thinking of gettin ga pn60 when they comeout, wondering if those site work with it.

By far most everything is compatible with Garmin and most newer software either works with or requires GPX files. If your GPS can save to a GPX or convert it to a GPX you should be able to get it to work with all of the newer software and websites.

I really like the fact that I can upload and edit my own hikes without waiting for someone else to do it. This may result in a bit of chaff out there but it also gives me complete control and immediate accessibility.

This site is cool in that you download your routes and they have a GPS Playback feature in that it maps your mountain bike ride and the pin moves to show the elevation profile, your route, speed and heartrate (if used.)

They rate your ride using a point system. Each week you are placed on a team (if you did at least one ride the week before) and you try to do as many rides as you can in order to win. You can steal points from other teams by doing the same ride one of them did.

It does make it kind of fun to see how many you can do in a week and it also motivates you to get in as much as possible.

While they do have a walking section, there are no competitions /games for that. You can still see other hikes that people do and it has the GPS Playback feature, but no teams.

+1 for everytrail.com. It's great for trip reports and research. I also check trimbleoutdoors.com for route ideas too.

Every trail is great, I just wish there was more content in Michigan on it. I guess I'll just have to keep adding to it.
