Bear Canister Rental on 05/21/2010 08:44:26 MDT Print View

I have considered renting out my bear canister to BPL folks. My house is on the way to the Sierras, Yosemite, etc. for just about everyone in the Bay Area.

I hate having it sit around unused.

I would charge something for it, not really to make money, just to get some bucks into PayPal so I can keep buying stuff, to which I am apparently addicted.

Is there a demand for canister rental?

I'm interested to find out what people think...

If you have a Bearikade Weekender and you have a reasonable price, I would be interested later this summer.

There is some demand for bear canister rental. That's why they are available at many permit stations at the national parks in California. The problem with renting at the permit station is that they must be returned to there, and if you were doing a long thru-hike, that is a big problem.

The other issue is that many backpackers like to have it a day or two in advance so that they can get it packed to the brim with food. If you arrive at the trailhead at the last minute and get a rental, you don't have much time to fool with it.

I have a Bare Boxer Contender with a capacity of 250 cubic inches for one person for three days, roughly.

I was thinking of renting it for $10.00 per trip, picked up and dropped off at my house. Again, I live right on the way between the Greater Bay Area and Yosemite, etc.

It looks like there is more interest in the Bearikade, maybe I should look into getting one of those instead.
