New Scout Buyer's Guide on 05/18/2010 09:08:23 MDT Print View

When the new scouts join my troop, their parents do the best they can and buy heavy gear. I'm working on a handout to give the new scout parents to help them buy lighter stuff from the beginning.

Surely someone else has done this. Anyone know where that list is?

Ryan's troop 676 on backpackinglight.com's web site has a checklist with recommended weights. You could use that as a guide and then build a best gear list. I like how his list gives maximums.

Thank you,

Jason Cuzzetto

Excellent resource. Thank you very much Mr. Cuzzetto and Mr. Jordan.

You guys would not believe the fight I am having with my troop committee presenting the first drafts of my gear buyer's guide. I'm not even pushing UL, and there is whining and teeth gnashing.

mp watches? on 06/08/2010 15:57:27 MDT Print View

the troop 676 backpacking handbook says no watches allowed, and no camp shoes. What's up with that?

The watch thing has to do with having the patrols be more 'aware' of their surroundings and the time of day. It also keeps them away from altimeter and compass watches. Keeping their map and compass skills fresh and strong. It makes sense. It doesn't say the leaders can't carry them. As a matter of fact - GPS and other such items are concidered mandatory for the leaders.

I think he is focusing on the real skills and responsibity we want the Scouts to have. If they set up late and night and have to cook in the dark, eventually they will figure out that wasn't such a great thing and they need to pay more attention to what they are doing.

Camp shoes are unnecessary weight. They are a luxary. The end. Not to say you can't carry them or allow them. But doing more with less and using a LNT aproach to your gear will also build stronger more thoughtful boys. Just a thought.

I finally got the Big 3 Buyer's Guide out of committee the hard way - it was thrown out. The latest "reason" was that it looks like a prohibited commercial endorsement. I guess that's somewhat legit.

Either way, the fight is over. It's my document now.

Here's the Big 3 Buyer's Guide.

I will now don my UL flame retardant suit.

Yea it wouldn't come up late last night, and it's giving me trouble this morning. The file properties are correct and it works sometimes. Perhaps gdocs is throttling it.

Direct link to the Big 3 Buyer's Guide:

So, I'm looking for a place to host it too. Any ideas?
