Making a Wider Polycro Groundsheet on 04/26/2010 18:15:07 MDT Print View

Was there a thread recently about gluing two polycro sheets together to make a wider one?

Anyone else got any suggestions on what works?

It depends on what you mean by wide, but you can buy fairly wide sheets of polycryo at the hardware store/home depot. It's sold as window insulation kits. They sell them wide enough to cover big sliding glass doors and huge windows. As far as I know it's the same material we know as polycryo.

Thanks, John, but I don't believe polycro and window insulation film are the same. In any case, I still have a supply of Polycro and am curious to know what kind of glue is effective. Glue should be impervious to water.

I am also interested in joining two pieces of polycro together to make a custom groundsheet for my newly arrived Zpacks Hexamid tent I would like to glue if possible but at the moment I am considering taping together with duct tape.

I think you're wrong, but it would be nice if someone could confirm for sure either way because if I'm wrong I would like to edit my post.

I had heard a while ago from multiple sources that the window film is polycryo and I bought a pack and compared it to my GG polycryo groudsheet and there was no apparant difference in either look, thickness, or handling.

I'd agree, from what I've gathered I think the polycro gc is very similar material to the window film sold commercially.

If you are right about the window film then the adhesive strips that come with it should work for joining pieces since they stick to painted woodwork etc.Ultra light, You'd probably have to overlap one sheet over another to make a seam but everything is so thin I doubt that you'd ever feel the seam.

Nashua foil tape. Tested it on a piece of the window insulation. I cut the 2" width in half but you could probably go even narrower.

Polycro vs. tyvek on 04/27/2010 10:40:51 MDT Print View

Polycro is pretty tough and much lighter than tyvek. I think tyvek is probably more durable, but not by much.

My wife hates the way polycro is invisible at night. This is after she set her clothing on what she thought was the groundcloth, but ended up being mud and stickers.

Ron sells double-wide plastic groundsheets. I don't have any experience with them, though.

John:

Wish I had known this before I ordered from GG. But good to know where to order double wide next time around. Thanks!

No problem Ben - I actually think I first learned about it here on BPL.

One note: I've read that some brands are thicker and some thinner than the GG stuff. If you do a search there is a post somewhere on here that discusses weight per square foot of a few different brands and compare it to the GG stuff.

John:

I think they are pretty much the same stuff. Both GG and MLD describe the material as used by food industry to shrink wrap food -- and the weights are the same as well:

GG - 0.55 oz. / sq. yd.
MLD - 0.5 oz. / sq. yd.

Polycro vs. Heatsheets on 04/27/2010 19:01:21 MDT Print View

Having never used the window film or polycro, is it much tougher than the LDPE (NOT mylar - think trash bags) version of Heatsheets (which happens to be about 0.6 oz/sq yd)? I was going to use that as a groundcloth.
