I'm planning on using Tyvek pants (2.2) with a Marmot Essence (6.5) for mt CT hike, for a total of 8.7 oz. Pants are nice to have.

Marmot essence (size S) 6 ounces
Golite Reed Pants (Women's Medium) 5.5 ounces
total: 11.5 ounces.

Lots of us reppin' the marmot essence it seems. I want to try John's idea of tyvek rain pants though. Can't think of a single reason not to do so, especially when we are talking about overnighter's/weekenders when durability isn't as crucial

Don't worry Ben, my sacrifice of dignity was well worth the .5 ounces in weight savings over the men's version :)

Tyvek! on 04/20/2010 19:11:41 MDT Print View

Yeah yeah yeah! I went looking into tyvek pants about a month ago or so on this site. I remember calling a company who mass produced them, and come to think of it they've never called me back.

Where did you get your tyvek pants from? How are they holding up for you?

eVent on 04/20/2010 19:33:14 MDT Print View

I have the REI Kimtah eVent jacket. It's great for fall, winter, and spring. Its a tad heavy though for summer though so I'm probably going to pick up ID's lightweight eVent pullover.

Howdy. I too am giving Tyvek pants a shot. I actually just ordered some today. You can order just about any type of tyvek clothing that is made from usplastics.com. The nice thing about this site is that you can order whatever quantity you want. Shipping is a little high but what can you do? Also, a while back Christopher Morgan posted this Tyvek Size Chart that gives a basic idea of sizing. I seem to remember reading in an article by Will Rietveld that you can seal the seams on these garments with silicone. I think I've also read that Weldwood Contact Cement works too. I'm going to do some experimenting after mine show up and I'll post the results. Hope this helps. Cheers.

After many variations I've settled on the ID eVent pullover ( 8.8 ozs ) and Montane featherlight pants ( 4 ozs ). The pullover doesn't have a hood ,but I always wear a hat anyway, wide-brimmed and wp/breathable. The pullover is plenty breathable to function as a windshirt and will handle all-out rain plus its outer layer is more bushwhack-proof than more lightweight fabrics like my Golite or Montane windshirts. The Montane pants are comfy and shed water just fine although after several years I've had to reapply the DWR, not hard to do.

Thanks Isaac for the link and everybody else for their comments. I do like the idea of the umbrella but in practice I don't find it works well for me. Sounds like I should be able to get by with just a rain jacket.

I only use a rain jacket and have always hated rain pants. I just got a smoking deal on a Marmot Precip for $54 at my local REI.

Tyvek from US Plastics vs DuPont on 06/28/2010 16:02:46 MDT Print View

Someone on this forum told me that Tyvek pants with the DuPont label were more durable than some others he had tried..

Does anyone know if the US Plastics tyvek pants are the durable kind? Are they DuPont?
