The following are all photos of Angophora Costata, they are known by a range of names but around the Sydney region we call them either Sydney Red Gum or Smooth Bark Apple. Angophora are "Gum" trees but are a separate genus to Eucalyptus. They come in a great variety of shapes and can grow in rock cracks on cliff faces.

My daughter calls this one the Medusa Tree.

Normally they have smooth bark but this one has these deep grooves along the trunk.
Grooved Trunk

For the past 30 years I have been watching this tree slowly grow around the rock.

This one is growing on top of a rock shelf in an exposed position.

Photo taken during my Party On the AT.

I call it The Great Grandfather Tree.

It looks like it had a rough life but is still tall and strong and deserving of respect. :-)
