Nemo Meta 1P on 04/06/2010 15:41:15 MDT Print View

I just got my Nemo Meta 1P tent and had a chance to set it up in the yard. I posted photos on Flickr: http://is.gd/bhExY

Nemo includes the tent, 6 tent stakes, two lengths of cord for the side tieouts, a patch, stake stuff sack, tent stuff sack.

Weights:
Tent - 916g
Tent stuff sack - 74g
Weight of single stake - 12g

Total weight of tent, 6 stakes, stuff sacks: 1076g

Setup is quick and took 5-7 minutes. I have not yet had a pad and bag in the tent. In my opinion, the side tieouts need to be used to avoid having the bag or your head touch the tent when lying down.

I'm looking forward to taking this out this season.

Ooooh pretty! Mike it looks like it's overkill for the weather you're having right now. :)

Take it out ASAP and let us know how it did. Definitely a good looking tent.

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering about the side pullouts. Although I like this design of shelter, for anyone over 6ft, the head and feet will touch....

Hi Alex-

Unfortunately, not yet. I have 5 kids and finding an open time slot requires advanced planning - and an open weekend. I may have a chance to take it out this weekend or next or I'll just sleep in the backyard for a night or two. :) So far, from my test setups, I can tell the side tie-outs are necessary to get adequate room for my head and feet - I'm 5'9". The bottom also needs to be staked out properly in order for the tent to take on its proper shape. This is my first non-freestanding tent so I'm still learning the ins and outs of proper pitching. I'll get photos of what the room looks like inside when the pad and bag are in there.

Hey Mike!

Thanks for letting me know. I hope you can take a break from the kids soon enough to get to enjoy it :)

We use the Morpho AR for myself + GF + dog. It also is my first non-freestanding tent. I can't say I hate it. As with all freestanding tents I've owned the directions called on staking the corners first anyway. The only difference is you can't move it as easy once it's "together'.

I'm going to do my first trip in the GoGo this weekend to see how it works out. I have a feeling it's going to be too small for self + dog. So I may need to switch over to the Meta 1P or Hex3.

First night out on 04/25/2010 22:48:13 MDT Print View

I just returned from a 24 hour trip down Piru Creek in the Sespe
Wilderness where I had the chance to use my Nemo Meta 1P for the
first time. Two friends and I hiked in to a small camp next to the
creek in a narrow canyon.

The Meta 1P comes with six DAC aluminum v-stakes but I brought two
additional MSR Groundhog stakes so I could stake out the ends of the
tent. This is necessary to give you headroom and foot clearance
inside when you are lying down.

On my trip, overnight temperatures were in the low 50s but we also
had very strong winds rushing through the canyon several times per
hour. I estimate that the 15-20 second gusts were about 40 mph. I had
pitched the tent so the right end was into the wind. The wind
direction shifted 180° by nightfall but that was ok since the other
side of the vestibule was closed up as well, providing the same
profile on the opposite end. I was pleasantly surprised that although
the winds were pretty strong, I felt no excessive air flow inside the
tent. If I put my hand near the rear vent, I could feel some airflow
but it was small compared to the outside. The noise from the wind in
the canyon was really strong and kept me up most of the night. During
the gusts, the windward end of the tent would bow in towards my face
but would recover as soon as the wind slowed. I was on a short NeoAir
mattress with an Exped air pillow. My pack was under my feet and I
still had about 12" of space between my head and the end of the tent
for other gear - I'm 5'9".

Overall, the tent performed excellently.

Without the end tieouts, is the length more limited?

David,

I'm not sure what you mean by length limited. If you mean useable length, then yes, in the sense that when you lie down the tent fabric would be closer to your face. With wind, it would probably touch my head without the side tieouts.

Nemo v.s. Moment on 04/25/2010 23:44:55 MDT Print View

I have a TT Moment and it appears, at 28 oz. to weigh about the same as the Meta 1 person.

Not to rain on yer parade but it looks like the Moment may be faster to set up and have more interior space. Did you look at the Moment before getting the Nemo?

Yah it's heavier on 04/25/2010 23:57:11 MDT Print View

But I trust the 20D PU nylon they use over the 33D silicone nylon that TT uses. 33d Silnylon just isn't very reliably waterproof...from my experience.

Moment on 04/26/2010 00:12:42 MDT Print View

Hi Eric-

Yes, I took a very close look at the Moment. That was actually my first choice when I started looking. Then I saw the SMD Lunar Solo, which lead me to also look at the Nemo Meta since it had a similar design. I thought the Nemo had more floor space, more durable floor, and looked like it would be less drafty than the Moment. I would still very much like to get a TT Moment so I can put them side by side.

Mike:

I see you live in So Cal. Just this past weekend, we had the AZDPCTKO event at Lake Morena, near San Diego. There were easily 100+ tarptents -- all models represented -- plus tarps galore (nylon, sil, cuben) and of course countless other tents. In addition to all these user tents... Ron Moak, Henry Shires, Glen van Peski, etc. were all on hand to showcase their products as well. It was tent nirvana. Too bad you missed it. :(

That actually sounds really appealing to me. Thanks for the great review. I'm glad it was wind tested as that was my major concern. I'm not worried with the waterproofiness* of the material so this really makes me want to check the Meta 1P out.

I'm doing a windy desert trip this weekend trying out the Nemo GoGo LE with my dog. (Friends will be there if it's not big enough) but if that doesn't work out I'm probably switching to the Meta.

Hi Michael - yes, that is exactly what I was asking. How tall are you if you don't mind me asking? At 6'1" I am thinking this one would be too short.

Edit - I see that you are 5'9"
