REI dividend, that is. A bunch of Mary Jane's meals, a new pair of sunglasses, a new Steripen Omni, and, yet again, I'm trying the Five Fingers.

I should have said Steripen Adventurer Omni. The new Adventurer has a different water sensing mechanism, and an integrated LED light you can use in a pinch if your headlight batteries die.

Between two new bikes last year for wife and daughter, a new sleeping bag, two new pads, and a bunch of other stuff...

I got $3.61. Not much dividend when you only buy sale stuff.

I'm planning to use the meager dividend and $20% off coupon for a new ice axe. Probably the Black Diamond Raven at 16 oz or Raven Pro at 14. Lighter axes don't inspire me much with their missing spike and aluminum heads.

I went with Marmot's Alpinist bivy. Anybody know about this one? Hope it's OK, since I'm trying to replace my Salathe with a lighter waterproof bivy...

REI dividend and always shopping on sale on 03/29/2010 20:56:15 MDT Print View

Maybe you already know this. But just in case:

If you get the REI Visa card and use that for your REI purchases, you will earn an additional 5% in your dividend. And that additional 5% even goes on sale and clearance items, even on garage sale items. All this is because the in-house card (through US Bank) saves the coop a lot on bank fees, so that is returned to the member by way of the extra dividend.

Normally REI gives you a $20 gift card for getting the REI Visa card. Right now there is a promotion going on, and you get a $40 gift card. Plus, if you get the little referral form from your favorite REI employee, and submit your application with their employee code, REI will give them $40 too.

They will also put in your dividend 1% of any non-REI use you make of the card.

No annual fees. I have no idea what the interest rate is--I don't pay credit card interest.

And yes, I work part time at REI. Since employees get discounts that are always better than the standard dividend, the REI Visa is the only way we get a dividend at all.

The standard KSOs. Okay so far. I actually ran in them on my treadmill for about half an hour, including some speed work. Interesting.

Mad rock chalk bag, subsequently converted into a camera bag for my GF1 with an innovative closure mechanism! I've attached it to the belt of my golite jam (removed the left belt pocket). Perfect fit for the GF1, fast in/out, nicely padded, and with a little cuben fiber flap, water resistent. Quite proud of this addition to my gear.

Nice little Ti-ware cup.

50ft of reflective shock cord.
