This time of the year, for weeks on end, girl scouts are out in full force. There's just no escaping them! OK, so they don't physically force you to buy their cookies, but you know you pretty much have to...

Anyone know anything about the company that makes these 'girl scout' cookies?? I vaguely recall reading about some pretty hefty profit margins!

Several companies make them.

PS And those cookies are evil. Just ate a sleeve of thin mints this afternoon. Well just I'll have to go out in the this weekend and work off the evil!

Thin Mints are enjoyable ... but it's Samoa's that are my downfall.

I have one in the house. Boxes everywhere.

In the USA there are two licensed bakers- each local council can choose which to buy from. ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers- each is owned by a big food conglomerate.

In our area the price is $4 per box. The wholesale price FOB the bakery is about $0.90; transportation and distribution about $0.25; prizes for the girls about $0.10. That leaves $2.75 profit of which my daughter's troop gets $0.75 and the local council gets $2.00.

Some of the council's profit goes to marketing supplies, but generally by using volunteers to do most of the work- plus grocery stores and employers letting people sell makes it a very efficient way to finance the many beneficial programs for Girl Scouts and their communities. (How's that for spin?)

Little Brownie Bakers is the bakery associated with the recent recall of Chalet Lemon Cremes - it's actually a "stock recovery" - due to off flavors allegedly associated with one of the oils used.

What??? The girl-scouts don't bake their own cookies? I thought that was part of the whole reason for them going around selling the da*nedd things? As part of their badges thingie. What is the world coming to?
