Matt if you want a lightweight kid pack I think the Ion might be a good choice. As far as volume I think its around 1500 cubic inches although as I mentioned above you can modify it. For me it holds a SUL summer kit and about two days of food. When I took a little brother's friend out I let him carry it. We stuffed his clothes, a 20 degree down sleeping bag, and his waterbottles in, I carried everything else. I've hauled up to around 15 pounds in it and been fine but for a little kid I'd aim for no more than 10 just because its a minimalistic pack. Have fun taking the little guy out!
