Jeff

Vidam's offer was actually 26 minutes after I said I would take it.

I guess in my book if someone offers something and someone says I'll take it the deal is done. Seems like that is how business has been done on this site. First one back gets the deal. I have been second and third many times.

Again if this goes through it WILL change how transactions get done on this site. If that is okay then so be it. Sellers will just sit on buyers and wait for better offers.

Agree with Cameron.

But, I've already given my $0.02, so now I guess I've given my $0.04.....crap! That wasn't the original deal!

Here's what you do; sell it to neither party, relist it on eBay since you should have anyway (if it was a bid list) and may the best man/woman bidder win! DONE!

Dave

Your idea would work well if the tent wasn't in the mail to vadim!

tracking tag on 02/17/2010 11:50:57 MST Print View

Well then, If there is a tracking number I believe you can call USPS or UPS or Fedex and tell them to return to sender at whatever point it is in the shipping process (that an error has occured and it will need to be returned to sender)...complicated, a pain, yes but it is a solution. Too bad this mess happened, it seems everybody gave it a good chance to resolve...tarptents do come up quite regularly on eBay. I am confident another similar tent similarly priced can be had relatively quickly or order from Joe Velasko and get an even lighter one!

What a thread....as previously stated...I think everyone that has read it learned from this OP. I have had multiple bidders on my items as well and even been offered well over my stated price BUT my thoughts are: I post an item at a price and that is my target price, if it hits...it sells to that bidder by order of priority and price i.e. the first to bid(PM or post) at my stated price gets it..but that's just me (and it seems the vast majority of gear forum posters).

best of luck,

couch

TarpTent on 02/17/2010 12:12:52 MST Print View

This has been a tough lesson: I'm probably out the $20.00, Garry's out $10.00 and Vadim is out of a tent. Unless of course Vadim keeps the tent which is rightfully his and Gary finds another good deal. I wasn't trying to be shady, just didn't realize "the code" here. To be fair to Vadim, I received multiple PM offers at higher prices. I declined however because I felt I had entered into a contract with Vadim through our Private Messaging...not the posting on the wall. I will add, one of the other offers was from a senior member. Had Vadim only PMed me (like the other members)...nobody would have known who was first or what was offered. I could have just said SOLD. Vadim meant no harm and shouldn't be bullied into giving up the tent. We just happened to be more transparent. The right thing to do is allow Vadim to keep the tent without any ill will. I kept my word to Vadim and have learned my lesson. I've been a member for 2 years...Blacklist me if you must.

For what its worth Shawn, I don't think you did anything wrong. If you had of taken someone's money and not shipped the goods or the tent was not as described, or you had agreed to sell the tent to someone for an agreed to price and then changed your mind when a higher offer came in, then I think that would shady. But taking a higher offer from someone who actually contacted you first by the method that you just described is just fine.

Regardless, it is none of anyones business who you sell your stuff to. If anyone has an issue, then they will simply not buy from you in the future. Their loss perhaps?

I've always treated PM's as my first source of info as I don't sit there and monitor the webboards when selling an item. This one needs to be let go of, too many people stuck their noses into where it didn't belong.

The guy made a mistake, he said he was sorry, cut him some slack and move on. He sold the tent already. What's done is done. Geesh.

Ok I give. I am tired of this. I think it will open a new era on this site but I guess that is okay. Vadim you can keep the tent, Shawn you can keep the $180 and I can keep looking. I guess that is fair. Thanks to everyone who chimed in and get your bids ready for sale items in the future.

Well, Vadim can do a search on this Gear Swap forum -- I DON'T EVER RECALL in the years that I've been here of anyone knowingly muscle in with a higher price after another member has already stated his/her decision to buy at seller's asking price! Bad form.

I would hate for his uncivilized behavior to be imitated by others. What next? FS - $160 -- then for seller to IGNORE a buyer's acceptance just to wait a few more days in the hope of something even better?? If so, then do us all a favor -- put the thing on Ebay or Craiglist -- not here.

Benjamin

That is my take also. I think this is a bad precident. There is no reason for a seller to accept the first offer. Soon the buyers will not post an "I will take it" and the forum will not work as well. But that seems to be okay with a lot of people. So here we go. Maybe we can add a reserve price for items.

I think this whole thread should quietly settle into the dust so people forget about it and the Gear Swap can and should carry on like it always has in the past.

Not if the seller was contacted by PM prior to looking at the forums.

Not if the seller was contacted by PM prior to looking at the forums.

Obviously! The bad form is in knowingly pushing out a fellow hiker ahead of you with more money!
