Hi all,

First week of March I am due in hospital for an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion in C5 - C6 due to a car accident 2 years ago.

The feedback from my surgeon is that I will be out of action from at least 1 month, then post that it could be up to 12 months before I should consider myself back to normal.

I am hoping that after the inital month I will be able to return to some form of hiking and that mid April I will back out there for good with a new body feeling great.

Anyone out there had similiar, and care to share your experience?

At least this will give you a little down time to do some future trip planning.

Whenever I have had medical challenges, I always try to emerge from the whole ordeal with a better sense of where I really want to go and why.

In 2008 I had a hernia operation..Not fun at all. But after the operation I thought I would be back to normal-- but I was not!! So what I am saying is take it easy after the operation..Little steps are good at first. Good luck with your neck operation.

I think you are right, the time away from work will help me to get my head together, then I will get back to life hopefully with a newed sence of enthusiasm and no pain.

Hi all,

Just an update if you are interested.

Surgery was last week, went really well, I was out of hospital in 4 days, up and walking 5 hours after, apparently as I dont recall much of the first two days.

So far so good on the recovery point, still a little pain however I think thats related to the surgery rather than the injury itself.

Few weeks to go before I am back to work so lots of time doing research on gear etc.

Im out for a short walk each day which helps to loosen up a little.

Back on the trail very soon I hope.
