antigravitygear rain jacket? on 01/09/2010 20:01:35 MST Print View

It seems especially light (around 5 oz.) and packable but wondering if it is truly waterproof for extended periods? I am not looking for any breathability or venting from this garment just want a truly waterproof jacket that would double as a windbreaker when it's too cold/breezy for my poncho.
Absolutely love a poncho for hiking in the rain since I am a serious sweater and overwhelm all the fancy breatheable jackets and gave up on them and don't miss the bulk and weight but there are times when more static in cold or wet weather where a real rain jacket would be nice.
Also wondering if it is going to be more durable than say Dri-Ducks or other uberlight gear..... of course compromises are expected at this weight.
Thanks.

Mike,
This is a silicone coated nylon jacket that will not allow water vapor to pass through it. If you are uncomfortable in waterproof breathable jackets, you will be more uncomfortable in silnylon. Suggest you try something light, vapor permeable and inexpensive, such as Dry-ducks discussed and sold on this site, before investing in W/B gear. I use Dry-ducks for walking the dogs on open roads and paths, where it is great, and unlike most rain jackets, protects my lower torso; so it should be fine around camp, but will tear if used in the woods. If you find you are OK with Dry-ducks, you might want to invest in an E-vent jacket from Integral Designs, but which will weigh around twice the 5 oz.

AGG hooded rain jacket on 01/09/2010 20:35:41 MST Print View

First of all, I have rain parkas that weigh 2.5 lbs., 1.5 lbs., 1.0 lb., and 8 oz. What I was looking for was something lighter. I ran across the AGG rain jacket a couple of months ago. After I gave it some thought, I returned to the web site to make an online purchase, but there was no availability by then. I gave it more thought and decided to make my own. The first one was a snug Medium in sil-nylon and came out at 3 oz. However, that was my training, so I made a second one in Pertex, a shade larger, and it came out at 4 oz. I was satisfied with that, and the ladies were amazed that a guy could make anything like that with new sewing machine. Shortly later, AGG got their product available again, so I ordered a Medium (aware that they run large). The Medium was very roomy for me, and it weighs 4 oz. The workmanship is impeccable. So, I might wear the fancy AGG one around town, and I might wear my own Pertex one in the mountains. I am NOT a poncho guy.

Appreciate the reply. I guess I am trying to say that the poncho will still be used during times of hiking/exertion for the great breatheability factor but the 'real" rain jacket will be more of a special purpose jacket used when otherwise not too active like while brook fishing or around camp especially when rain/wind/cold would intrude the poncho.
I have tried Event and Gore and Ducks..... and they just don't cut it for me during exertion especially hiking up hill I end up unzipping them and still wetting out from the inside so really looking for a lightweight and packable (fanny pack or fishing vest) rainproof jacket and not just a DWR rain resistant type garment.

Bob that sounds interesting will look into the ACG jacket too.
I was really phobic about the poncho for years but bought an el-cheapo to try out from Dick's and have been very happy with it especially for the ventilation that I could never get with a rain jacket.
BUT LIKE YOU i AM LOOKING FOR A REAL WATERPROOF RAIN JACKET FOR AN EXTRA LEVEL OF SECURITY WHEN DEALING WITH NASTY WEATHER AND FOR AN EXTRA 5 OUNCES WOULD BE WEIGHT WELL CARRIED.

George at AGG was very helpful when I asked email questions about size. Then he mentioned that he could do one in Black or maybe other colors besides the Silver/Gray one that was offered on the web site. I ordered the Black one, and when I received it I noticed that the sil-nylon fabric was a bit better than the sil-nylon I had purchased for my own use. Elastic at the bottom, drawcord on the hood. Velcro patches over the zipper and at the cuffs. Decent, and the price was cheap.
