MYOG Down Socks on 01/03/2010 21:09:40 MST Print View

I just finished making these a few days ago, and thought I might show you guys what I ended up with. These down socks are sized XL (for size 13), have around 1 oz of down fill, using 1.9oz ripstop breathable fabric, weigh 3.0 oz exactly on my scale with the stuffsack. I thought about making some to sell if there is any interest. I would probably use 1.1 oz breathable ripstop from now on, so they would be lighter than 3 oz, and lighter still for smaller sizes. If there is anyone interested, let me know. I am hiking the Georgia section of the AT this week, will be back 01/09/10. Pictures below...

The top goes about 6" up your leg with elastic to keep them up.

I was thinking maybe $50, compared to Nunatak's $118?

Great job. I'm sure you will have buyers. Sierra Designs' prices are a bit less, but do weigh more. Nunatak prices are a joke.

I'd purchase a pair on 01/03/2010 21:29:57 MST Print View

I would be interested in a pair. I wear a size 11 boot. Would you wear socks while also wearing the booties?

Great idea, there is not much out there in this market segment.

Is the sole also down and ripstop fabric?

Are baffles to prevent the down from moving around necessary?

I would be interested in a pair.

I'm back early from my hike, it was predicted to snow, so I decided to play it safe and get off early. I would recommend something to keep the wind off your face, and a good seeping bag, it got down to 8 degrees F at night.

I need to order the fabric, so which color would you guys prefer if I only get one color? Blue? Navy? Black? Orange? Red? Gray? Green? Yellow? Purple? White?

Also, would anyone be willing to pay $7 extra for Momentum 0.9 oz instead of 1.1 oz fabric?

David, the entire sock is ripstop and down, and is not baffled. It seems to have enough down for it not to move around very much if at all.

Laurence, I have worn them both with and without socks, and cannot tell much of a difference, but depending on your personal preference, you may not like the feel of the ripstop nylon against your skin.

Black (or whatever) on 01/08/2010 15:39:01 MST Print View

Ben,

Actually any color would be fine for me. I am mostly planning on wearing these in my sleeping bag anyway.

I might also purchase a pair of smaller ones for my wife if you make them. She wears a woman's size 7 shoe.

50$ for Down Socks Awesome! My feet start off being warm inside my bag, come 2A they are cold no matter what sock combo I wear. So, if you're making them, I'm definitely interested.

I would probably need an equivalent to a mans size eight so they won't be too tight and can wear a thin sock if needed.

Color, whatever the majority prefers is fine with me, I'll only be wearing them inside my bag.

Ben- how do I order?

Count me in at a size 9.5 or 10. Black is also fine with me.

How does $55 shipped sound for any size with 1 oz of down with black Momentum .90 oz fabric?

I will probably offer them in 4 sizes:

Small: Men's size 7-8
Medium: Men's size 9-10
Large: Men's size 11-12
X-Large: Men's size 13-14

This may change once I get the patterns for each made up, and they fit fairly loose, so don't expect an exact fit on these. The pair that I made is an XL, and the down loft sort of envelopes my foot once I get it on, but I still have lots of wiggle room. I wear a size 13 shoe BTW...

Edit: I can also offer custom sizes for those who have very small or large feet, since I won't have a pattern though, how about $5 extra?

I would be interested in a pair for my big feet. Do the have any tough stuff of the bottoms or are the strictly inside sleeping bag items?
Thanks

Count me in too for a pair of XL's.

Black Rock Gear is likely going to start making similar socks this year in addition to their hats, so beat them to the punch :)

These are for inside your sleeping bag only. You could see if the XL's would fit, or I could make an XXL for $5 extra.

I'm in for a size large black or blue doesn't matter. I've been looking for something affordable to keep my feet warm in my bag, seems like thats the only part of me that gets cold no matter what type of sock I wear. Let me know when to send money. With these and my Merino base layer I should be able to take my Marmot Atom down to the mid 20s. Thanks Jack
