bivy help needed on 11/21/2009 10:33:47 MST Print View

I was wondering what people would suggest for a commercial bivy for the tall (6'5") and side sleeping. Thanks.

Bivy Shelter (i.e. poled) or no poles?

Any of the Integral Designs Bivvies will fit you without any issue.

Tarp on 11/21/2009 10:52:57 MST Print View

I have an 5'x8' Intregal Designs tarp, I'm 6'4". I haven't been out with it yet but, have set it up in the yard. I think it would work just fine...as long as its not raining. The end would have to be set very low to keep blowing rain from soaking my bag.

Brett - bug netting?

If not required, then the ID all eVENT Overbag would be a great choice. Waterproof, breathable and you can have the bag roll with you as you side sleep as the bottom is eVENT as well.

I would need bug protection for the 90F+ degree summers. And thanks David but I think $240 is a bit much for something like that.

Take a look at the Oware drawstring bivy in a tall. It is wide and long, has netting and cost around $100. We've been using them for close to 2 years under his tarps on beaches and in the forest. They have held up well. weight is 6 oz. Here, shown along the Chilkoot Trail

Front Country (A sub of Prolite Gear) has them on for $192 and the Micro Bivy in eVENT with a PU floor for $149. You could sew a detachable bug net on it....?

Not sure what you mean by commercial, but the TiGoat Raven with full bug net hood is a great bivy.

+1 on the TiGoat Raven Bivy

With the added full bugnet hood and shipping, this bivy comes to your door at $138. And it's great. Mine weighs 7.7 oz. Paired with my MLD tarp, it's a fantastic combination, IMO, coming in at just about 1 pound.

It is plenty long and holds my 6'6" WM bag with room to spare at the top and bottom for all my other gear.

TiGoat offers a side zip option too which seems like another good option.

By commercial I meant something that I did not have to make myself but I guess that should be an option also.
