A nod to the UK magazine Climb's march issue with an article on lightening a climber's load [with a link back here]
In a brief thought on ultra racers sleeping on bubble wrap they suggested this...the balloonbed, 100 grams and packs small. www.balloonbed.co.uk. 19 pounds british.

I tried one, used it on very hard ground - air temp was about 30. It was reasonably comfortable actually. The upside obviously is the weight and the amount of "cushion". The downside is the need to use new balloons every night, having to carry enough of them for the entire trip plus extras, and some of them lost quite a bit of air over the course of the night. It took about 5 minutes to set up.

I think Bill Fornshell talked about this in the past and even made his own.

Yes, I played with the Balloon Bed idea and made one back sometime back around the summer of 2004.
My Balloon Bed

The Balloon Bed grew into my HyperLight Poly Tube Air Mattress and then the Poly Tube Down Air Mattress.

Mark Verber did a good review on the

Well, i've just ordered the BalloonBed over the internet from www.balloonbed.co.uk although after having placed my order, I found the same product marginally cheaper from www.planetfear.com - For the price, I couldn't be hassled with having to make my own etc. So, it will be interesting to see just how effective it really is. I'll post once i've been able to give it a go.
