Some rare good news: Tahoe National Forest (California) has added some prime acreage.

Those familiar with the history of the West will recognize the checkerboard land pattern—a product of 19th century railroad building. Land transfers and purchases like these can fill in some of the historical gaps, helping create more contiguous habitats and recreation areas.
