UL Pack Questions on 11/13/2009 11:01:07 MST Print View

I'm narrowing down my Colorado Trail Pack. Here are the contenders:

1-MLD Ark
At 15.75oz this is the lightest. Can I really use a regular neoair as the frame? Would it be good to add a zseat or some section of a closed cell pad as well?

2-ULA OHM
Much smaller main pocket than the Ark but it has an actual support system.

3-Gossamer Gear Gorilla.
Much smaller main pocket than the Ark but it has an actual support system.

All 3 packs are in the same price.

I would appreciate any input or experience you may have with these packs.

Thanks

As an owner of the Ohm, I will say you can't go wrong. I'm not sure what your food resupply plan is. But, if I were going to be hauling some big loads food wise, I'd narrow to the 2 packs w/ support. If you're expecting to resupply every 4 or 6 days then this becomes less of a concern. I just returned from a 225 mi. jaunt w/ my Ohm. I love it. I carried 4 days of food on the first leg and 3 days on the second leg. My base weight hovered around 15-20(I didn't formally weigh it). As my food stores emptied, I just shouldered the pack sans hipbelt/sternum strap and had no problems. Of course this has me considering moving in to a lighter MLD Revelation type pack. I still like the thought that I can load this thing up w/ 9 or 10 days of food and have a support structure. If money is not an issue, one can justify a frameless and framed pack in the arsenal if they are going on big multiday runs. Sorry for my rambling. Good Luck. Check out the Super Prophet and Super Exodus too. They look to be a nice durable option for the stable too!
