This post is directed at Roger Caffin or any of you that have used the Dunlop K26 running shoes in your hiking. I'm a size 15 US, so I won't be getting a pair of K26's. However, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the New Balance 574 running shoes? They look pretty comparable to the Dunlops, are reasonably priced, and they come in large sizes. I just returned from a 225 mi hike in my Montrail Mountain Masochists and they tortured my forefoot, namely my pinky toes. Advertised as a wide shoe, including numerous reviews claiming a wide box as well, I found them to be otherwise. I can't wear a wide shoe without my heels swimming. So, I have to have a wide/deep toe box. I could throw money at the problem and find a suitable replacement(Brooks Cascadia?), but I'm proceeding with caution on my next shoe choice. The manufacturer info on the 574's state that the last used for the 574 is a narrow heel, wide toe box, deep toe box. I know a lot of people are going to swear by trail runners, but I'm not convinced that my shoe has to be a trail runner. I've ran 5 marathons and never had the foot issues in standard running shoes that these Montrails have given me. So, before anyone says you get what you pay for, let me state that I'm not refusing to spend another $100 on shoes. I just want to expand the discussion to "budget" minded models as well. The 574 can be had for $65 shipped. Cheers.
