Hey all... it's barely fall in SoCal, so my brother in law and myself have decided why not do an overnighter this upcoming saturday to test some newly acquired gear(he wants to get out in his new Contrail).
We are looking for some suggestions for one-nighters in the area... We live about 30 minutes north of Los Angeles. Any Los Angelites have any local favorites or any suggestions that won't put us up too high in chilly teens at night? Thanks!

San Mateo Wilderness is a good spot this time of year, however it is probably bone dry right now. I wait until we get moisture before heading up there.

Gabrielino is a good one-nighter. Though, a lot of the backpackers never cache their food so the bears might be a bit annoying. Nevertheless, bring your canister/ursack or what have you.

I'm pretty sure that the Station Fire completely obliterated all vegetation within miles of the Gabrielino trail.

I'll piggy back on here, if I may. I'm in the opening stages of planning a trip with my dad and two younger brothers for a few days in late July 2010... in/around the San Diego/LA area. Neither my youngest brother or my Dad really do any hiking, so it can't be anything crazy strenuous. We might even have to go with car-camping and day-hikes.

What is the most beautiful terrain/parks/locations in that part of the country? Any suggestions are welcome. I'll be following this thread with interest for any suggestions in/around LA and SoCal. Thanks in advance.
