1.5oz Cuben on 10/03/2009 09:13:05 MDT Print View

Thinking about using this for the bathtub zip-out floor in the mid I'm starting on.. Any reason why this wouldn't be perfect for that app?

Anybody know where to get this in small quantities?

Can I get it from the manufacturer?

I need only like 4-6y2

seems wasteful to me. Silnylon is near the same weight at around 1.3-1.4oz yd2 and has proven itself on shelter floors. Yeah the cuben will be tough enough but that is a huge cost increase for no weight gain over a proven fabric (sil) that is much much cheaper.

My thoughts.

Just thought that stuff would be pretty much bulletproof from the descriptions I've read about it.

I want to make one extremely durable/waterproof bathtub floor, that can withstand the wear my full grown great dane will likely inflict.

Although it is definitely costly..

Do you not think the durability factor would be much higher than silnylon? The price performance ratio is probably really skewed, but then again, that's the impression I get about the Cuben, regardless of which weight/application used.

if i was using it with my dog i may consider using a 1.9oz nylon floor (sil or PU), but if i know it might get beat up i wouldn't put the kinda money into it that CUBEN will require.

Money is the biggest factor in my gear so it may not be the same for you, i am poor.

Considering that Cuben is designed for use in the Air, I consider it great for shelters, OK for packs, and beyond design parameters for the ground.

With care I'm sure one could get by and save some weight. But all it takes is one flake of granite, or a dry fir needle, and you'll be searching for a leak.

IMHO.

Yeah ok, maybe not then.. on 10/05/2009 11:25:25 MDT Print View

Yeah, what I'm looking for is the opposite of "with care" for this floor.

I'm trying to keep the weight down, but make it as indestructible as possible. The rest of the tent likely wont be, but I'm concerned about the floor with my dog, he's just not as conscientious as a human, by no fault of his own.

I'd go floor-less, but that's not an option for my lady, and it kinda sucks in certain weather anyway.

So what's the best weight/durability ratio'd kit for this application? Yeah cost is something of an issue for sure, I'm pretty poor myself, but if I something is worlds beyond a cheaper option, I'll save..

The 1.9oz nylon? I know people use it, just the stuff that I've seen doesn't seem that super strong/puncture resistant. Maybe that's just an illusion based on the tactile feel of the stuff.

Anyway, really appreciate all the feed-back on this one. I'm definitely still learning.

So you are traveling with your dog and your lady and looking to lighten the load? Have you thought about leaving one behind? Perhaps the one less grounded? :-)

you trying to get me killed? on 10/05/2009 20:01:45 MDT Print View

Don't put thoughts in my head that will only get me in more trouble, than building all my gear to make everyone happy will... :P

Just the mention of buying a single person Clark Jungle Hammock got me in trouble for at-least a day.

My 2 40+ lb dogs have put the floor of my Sierra Designs tent through hell. It's listed as 70d silnylon, which I believe is 1.9(correct me if I'm wrong). If it were going to tear from the dog's paws, it would have long ago. I agree w/ Tim. Save the money and if it tears or punctures sew/glue a patch on there and keep going. I'd use my dog more for packing gear, but by the time I pack enough of his food in his pack, there isn't much room left.
