Ya'll probably know about this already, but don't forget to watch the new Ken Burns documentary "The National Parks, America's Best Idea."

Burns is probably the greatest documentarian of all time. He apparently spent six years compiling images from all the national parks -- from Acadia to the Everglades.

It airs on PBS over six nights, starting Sunday Sept. 27 at 8 p.m.

Along the same lines, National Geographic has a special on November 10th at 8pm regarding the Appalachian Trail.

Thomas - Thanks for the reminder on the documentary, but don't get your hopes up too high on Acadia. There isn't much "backpacking" available there and no backcountry camping is permitted. You're pretty limited to day hiking and setting up shop in the NPS campgrounds - but still worth a trip.
