WTB: 2 Person 3-season tent on 07/19/2009 10:58:14 MDT Print View

criteria include:

1) double wall
2) side entrance
3) prefer to be at or under ~4 lbs
4) inexpensive. i'm not looking to drop a ton of cash. Just something quality that I can fit my young son in with me.
5) prefer free standing, but not required

Examples:
Sierra Designs Lightning, Rei quarterdome 2, or anything else you might have in your closet you want to get rid of that fits the bill!

Alps Zenith 2 on 07/19/2009 11:15:59 MDT Print View

Jay -

Just in case one of the forum members doesn't have something that fits the bill, I can highly recommend the Alps Mountaineering Zenith 2 (since rebranded the Zephyr 2). Heavy for this site at 4 lb 8 oz, but very easy to set up, vents well, and spacious for two. The tent body itself is freestanding, but each of the two vestibules requires one stake. It's sold at Sierra Trading Post for just over $100, and you'll get frequent discount coupons if you're on their email list.

It's been good for me as I'm working toward lightening my load more.

Jeff,

Yep. Pretty familiar w/the Zephyr. I've got a one man Zephyr and have had the Zephyr 2.0 in the past. The Alps Zephyr tents are tough to beat for the price and features.

That being said. I'm sure that 4 lbs 8 oz in the trail weight. Still a respectable weight for the non UL crowd (which I belong to btw)

However as much as I liked the two doors and vestibules I found it really tough to get a tight pitch with it.

I'm looking for something a tad lighter. Thanks though and maybe if nothing shows up I'll go back to the Zephyr.

Jay,
I'm in the same boat as you. I have used the Zephyr 2 as a solo shelter. Very spacious, but very heavy... however, I didn't know that until I found this site ;)

What I have done is use the Zephyr 2 without the tent body. Its 3lbs 7oz and is huge when set up this way; plenty of room for two with gear. While not UL it is reasonalbe for two. I plan on using this for now when my son and I go out.

I'm 6'1" and he is now (at 13) 6'1" as well. I make him carry the tent :)

I'll also mention - The faster he walks, the more gear gets moved to his pack :)
