1. Trekking poles are stupid.
No they're not.
Yes they are.
No they're not.

2. You ultralighter's are crazy. How do you poo without toilet paper?

Here are 20 TP alternatives with associated diagrams.

3. Crazy gear deal!

My wife is going to kill me.

4. Philmont is coming up in 2013, and I want to be ready.

Yeah, but you have to carry all that heavy gear.

5. I found this crazy new way to set up my Contrail using only 5 poles and 12 guylines.

6. BPL Bay Area meetup #64.

7. The following BPL items are back in stock.

Why is it that items are never in stock?

8. Should I buy a bearvault or bearikade?

Global warming is evil. So is smoking. And guns.

9. Here's a picture of this lizard I saw.

Wow, that's a great picture. Here is a frog picture.

On topic #8,

I quit smoking two weeks ago and have been completely smoke free! Going on my first smoke-free hike Thursday. Woo-hoo.

(I still can't bring myself to quit global warming, or engaging in pointless global warming debates online. Baby steps....)

11. Which are better? Titanium goat poles or GG lightrek 4s?

Refer to question number one

12. What's the lightest way to keep my dog warm on a trek?

Leave him at home in front of the fire, or get Nunatak to make him a custom UL sleeping bag.

13. Which is better? A DWR windshirt or a less breathable and heavier fully waterproof jacket?

Ummmmm. The apple or the orange?

14. Torso-length sleeping mats

are you kidding?

15. Can I get away with just an emergency reflective blanket on a summer ascent of Mt Everest?

Depends on if you carry other insulated clothing, or can bribe a sherpa enough to carry a sleeping bag for you.

16. Do you cut the handle off of your toothbrush?

No Way. It doubles as my weapon...I can always sharpen the handle on a stone and stab a grizzly with it.

Montrail or innov8's?
There's a war on, chose a side!

Tarp or tent?
Real man or wimpering sissy?

If Ryan Jordan and Glen Van Peski were in a ul cage match to the death, who would come in lightest at the weigh in?

What about Henry Shires vs Ron "Fallingwater" Moak in a ti stake fight?

Lynn, you rock. Well a very light rock.

"If Ryan Jordan and Glen Van Peski were in a ul cage match to the death, who would come in lightest at the weigh in?"

Is that a "UL Cage" match or a UL "cage match"?? Makes all the difference to who would win...

17. and 18. (And yes, these have both been discussed here at BPL)

Are you more UL if you have smaller t e s t e s or b r e a s t s ?

Depends on how it affects you total "skin-out" weight.

"I made some cuben fiber underpants and they weigh only
2 grams!"

"Isn't that hot?"

"No, they have side zips"

"What weight of cuben fiber?"

"I chose the .3 oz version and washed them 6 times in
a tea and bug repellent solution to give them a nice
blend in tint so they won't show under my possum fur
kilt."

Lynn, you made me snort out loud... at work! #'s 14, 15, and toothbrush handle. I don't laugh out loud very often. Thanks!

Edit: I'm pretty sure the UL Cage is made of (and reinforced with) Spectra fiber... Any sort of aluminum is probably too heavy.

#19- I want a pack that weighs an ounce, will expand to carry 70 liters of winter mountaineering gear, and will carry it comfortably. Oh. And it should cost less than a hundred bucks. And be waterproof.

Let's redefine comfort.

(Well, in fairness, there's a lot of that in "traditional" backpacking venues too.)

#20- Quilt or bag?
(All-out war ensues)

#21- I've got this lightweight Maglite that only uses 2 D cells...
(Minutes after reading this, 20% of the BPL readership is on their way to the ER in cardiac arrest.)

#22- What kind of stove should I use for this winter trip coming up?

Buy a canister stove, take it apart, get some other bits and pieces, a welder and a lathe'd be handy...

#23- Titanium
(Ohmmmmmmmmmmm...)

"After reading all the posts in the Chaff section, I've
decided my next pair of cuben fiber undies will have a
gun pocket. Or maybe a pepper spray pocket. Which do your think
is better?"
M. Ultralighter

"Hey, Mr cuben undies, who lived there first, the blue tailed
skink or you? Do you know have much damage pepper spray can
be to a skink, no matter how aggressive?"
Tree S. Itter

"I find I can do without undies just fine while backpacking."
