I tried measuring my torso and I think I'm 23.5"

I'm a 6'2" guy, does that sound right?

Use a cloth tape measure. Have someone measure your torso. Several websites have pictures of how to do this. My son is 6'3" and wears a medium pack. But, he has long legs.

If purchasing by mail, make sure you can return it if the size is wrong.

I was at bass pro shop the other day trying on packs (only place around here that has them). None seemed to fit me very well. I was really liking my army ruc after that fitting session. I didn't think I was all that tall, but I guess I am. I just assumed the 21" would fit me.

I searched this site and saw some recommendations for ULA gear. Might try that. But that means a fortune for a backpack. But, I'm guessing a backpack can make or break a hiking experience so its probably worth some money.

A proper fitting pack is critical. For UL packs, I like Gossamer Gear and ULA. There are several other oustanding companies. You can get a great pack for under $200. Also, great buys can be found here on Gear Swap. Just do an accurate measurement, review the gear company websites for sizing instructions.

What Nick said is certainly important, but there is another option: get a pack without a hipbelt, then the size of the pack won't matter. Of course this presupposes an UL kit. My summer pack, a Gossamer Gear Whisper which by design is beltless, usually weighs in at around 11-13 lbs total (food , water, shelter etc.). My winter pack, a Golight Jam, is often carried without the belt clicked, something I can do because the total weight is under 20 lbs. However, if you're carrying more weight than that you'll definitely want a hipbelt for better load distribution. Happy trails!

Monty is right about the hip belt on light packs. If I carry only 2L of water and minimum food with my GG Murmur, I take the belt off. If I am carrying more water and food and the total weight gets around 15-17 lbs, I use the belt.

going hip-belt-less may not work for me. I'm carrying heavier loads. Even if I get ultra-light, I'm still carrying for two. My son is to little to carry his full weight right now.

Good point. I suggest you do your research and then order a couple of packs from manufacturers who will let you return an unused one. GG, ULA, SMD, MLD and others are good about this, unless it is custom-made. A little return postage to ensure the 'perfect' pack is a small price to pay, IMO.
