Ski Pole Tip durability on 02/01/2006 10:16:53 MST Print View

Does anyone have a comment on the durability of a "hardened steel" ski pole tip when used as a trekking pole? I was thinking of getting some Scott Synergy ski poles (cheap, rel. lightweight) to use as trekking poles. I am also going to look at MYOG the tips and adding a Leki tip if the factory tips are unsuitable.

I wanted to try out treking poles so I grabbed a pair of aluminum ski poles from Finland at goodwill for $3. I've hiked ~140km with them in the Canadian Shield, so mostly walking on hard granite, the tips started with a good point but are worn down to nubs now. I could probably get another 60km in on them before theyre worn down to the plastic, but they have less purchase on rock.
