My wife and I just back from the Italian, French and Swiss Alps. It really is amazing to me how much there is above treeline, but below the glaciers/snow fields (and there is plenty of ice and snow). I do most of my hiking in the Cascades, where we have a huge sub-alpine area (lots of little trees mixed with blueberry bushes and heather). The European Alps don't seem to have much of that -- there is a much more abrupt switch from the trees to the meadows, with the meadows covering a huge area. I find it all very interesting.

Anyway, great pictures. I'll add to them when I get some time.

I think that may be due to the cows. Where there is forest the area is usually fenced of from the cows on the high pastures, so the forest grow. But the high pastures are grazed pretty heavily, so they are just grass.

I think that may be due to the cows.

Cows, and even higher up, sheep!

Also why the milk there tastes so delicious! No grain-fed livestock!

All these shots are wonderful, but Roger, that Hornli shot from below... wow. Two years ago I was very near the Matterhorn, but never right up against it. Must have been awe-inspiring and quite intimidating to be right beneath the great spire!

Hi Miguel

Obviously impressive, but ...

There's a statue on a fountain in Zermatt to a local Guide, Ulrich Inderbinen (1900-1990). It records that he climbed the Matterhorn (obviously with clients) 370 times. The Guides' fee for climbing the Matterhorn is about 1,800 Swiss Francs. It's very popular ...

If one looks closely at the start one sees a large bronze statue on the face (Virgin Mary), and a plethora of fixed ropes. I am afraid that the Hornli ridge has gone from being impossible, to a hard route, to a trade route, to a bread&butter for the guides.

But it is still impressive, despite some people claiming it is entirely loose rock. Well, there is a lot of loose rock there in some places, but that tooth still sticks up awful high, with some awful steep faces.
Sue said she'd let me do it with a Guide, but it seemed a bit commercial these days.
.
7269Matterhorn.jpg

The HornliHutte and HornliHutte Hotel are just below dead centre. The photo of the start of the ridge was taken from above that, a bit to the right.

Re: Re: Re: Above Treeline on 09/26/2009 11:57:05 MDT Print View

Are the meadows in the Alps caused by cows and sheep? Could be. I thought of that too. There is no doubt that they contribute to it (we saw plenty of both everywhere). But it is also a "which came first" thing. The cows and sheep were sent to the high lands because there were meadows up there. I think the word "alps" comes from the meadow, not the mountains. It is possible that the meadows might have started small and then grew with livestock, or maybe they were big to begin with (we did see plenty of forest as well, with a very distinctive tree line, which would imply that it was climate, not livestock that contributed to most of the meadows).

Maybe it is because the summers are warm over there, with many sunny days. If so, then they are like the California Sierras (which also has a big alpine area). Whereas the Cascades (and Canadian Rockies) have very short summers. Maybe the European Alps are like the California Sierras, with the addition of some really high peaks to add to the glaciers.

Anyway, here are some pics -- All of these are in the Vanoise:

Alp Questions on 10/03/2009 11:13:36 MDT Print View

Ross on p. 2 asks, "Are the meadows in the Alps caused by cows and sheep?"
I beliefe they were casued by the glaciers, but...

From a Sierra Club Guidebook on the Austrian Alps by William E. Reifsnyder

"In this Upper Zone (timberline), there are extensive pastures, or alms, which are used for grazing cattle and sheep in the summer months. There is considerable evidence that the natural tree line has been lowered about 600 feet because of the heavy grazing."

To add to your (Ross) comments on climate, from the same source:
"...because the mountains (Alps) are oriented east-west across Europe, they permit the flow of moist maritime air from the Atlantic Ocean deep into the continent. Thus, the climate is wetter and warmer that might be expected for such latitudes.....The southern slopes of the Alps, though at the latitude of Mont Tremblant in Quebec, have a climate that is much closer to that of southern Sierra Nevada in California..."

The german word "alpe" and "alm" does translate to high meadow and high mountain meadow.
"Alpen" translates to alpine.

"Great mood."

I can still remember what my mood was, Craig: Awestruck and very, very humbled at being well and truly in the abode of the mountain gods. It is a very spiritual place. I spent most of two weeks floating along that ridge in the second picture feeling very airy/empty and at peace. I feel it is no accident that the Sherpa are Buddhist. The Khumbu is very conducive to that state of being.

Thanks Kat.
I've edited the post to add places. It's the first time I've posted photos and I didn't realise the descriptions wouldn't be visible.
The Bolkar and Aladaglar are part of the Taurus (Toros) Mountains in southern central Turkey. The Kackars are in the northwest, close to the Black Sea.

Thanks Ed, both for the comment and for pointing out the error with the date (now corrected). I guess I'm looking forward to going back this year too much.
I loved your photos earlier in the thread too, but didn't comment partly because I'm lazy (there are so many great photos in this thread - I'd like to praise them all) and partly because I'm jealous of how many different places you've been to.

And check out Dan's report that I referenced in the first paragraph. Really nice pics in there.
