My Olympus C700 has disappeared. I have had great results on all my trips with this camera. I purchased new in 2001. Great battery life good versatiliy for a point and shoot and good 10X zoom.
I need some ideas for a replacement.

Cannon Elph on 01/18/2009 13:47:53 MST Print View

I have a Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP Digital Elph, and love it. I haven't put it on the scale yet. They have newer modles in the Elph line now. Cannon's optics and firmware are great and this camera is very small. Battery life is great, I put an 8GB card in mine which takes over 2000 pics at high quality. The battery is good for at least 500-900 shots depending on flash usage. It also does better than usual video 640x480 at 30 fps.

I would 2nd the Canon Digital Elph.

I have been shooting all of my photos with a 6 yr old 3.2 mega pixel S230 and it has treated me well.

When mine dies, I plan on getting either the base model 1100 IS or the 850.

Small, light, and I love the panoramic feature for capturing those big landscape shots.

3rd vote for Canon Digital Elph. I have the SD800 which shoots wide-angle which I love for landscape shots. Image quality and battery life are both great. Check out the CHDK firmware addon ( which adds advanced features to the camera.

I, too love my Elph!

The 750 for me. Can't add any more superlatives...They have them covered.

Here's another Canon Elph vote!

I have a Canon SD880, and I highly recommend it. Having a true wide angle is huge. It's compact, fast, and light, and it was only $250. My DSLR is Nikon (which rarely goes backpacking with me), but I like Canon pocket cameras better.

i likes my olympus waterproof/shockproof on 01/19/2009 00:09:07 MST Print View

i tend to get wet and fall down a lot ... or is it fall down and get wet a lot?

so, even though there are cameras out there that take better photos, and there are lighter models, the waterproof/shockproof features are the trumps for me. also i like the small battery with long life & the tiny XD memory cards.

How can I stay out of this one?

There is a Photography forum, just scroll down the index.

A bit further,

A bit more,

There it is....

You will find there plenty of advice more or less to do with "backpacking cameras".
