I love my OR Sonic balaclava. I cut out the mesh and the gross grain ribbon that was on top of the mesh, though.

My GF got me the Jetboil I wanted, which came with the coffee press (which was far lighter than listed weight) and the stabilizer stand + pot stand. Total weight without pot stand (which I don't need) of the entire thing is less than a lb.

With the 40% off sale I got the few things in stock that I needed, 6 titanium stakes and the 5 mini squeeze bottles.

REI's bait-and-switch on 12/26/2008 12:25:26 MST Print View

Is it just me or did REI put everything back to full price after Christmas.....hrmmm....seems like they want full-price for items bought with the gift cards, now that gift-buying is over.

Kind of irritating because after I saw how low they were willing to go, it's hard to pay full-price for anything.

REI's bait-and-switch on 12/26/2008 14:12:33 MST Print View

Luckily, REI carries almost no UL stuff -- so no temptation there...

If you need to buy something, anything at all, wait till late Feb or March. My prediction is that by that time many retailers (including REI) will be selling lots of stuff for less than cost.

I was a good boy:

Zebralight H30 w/2 RCR123A Batteries and Charger
Perhaps the perfect headlamp for backpacking? Haven't tried it for that yet, but for reading up-close thru on-trail navigation, the H30 really "shines."

Kershaw Two-Can
OK, I was looking for a tiny one-handed open/close knife, and decided to go with the Two-Can, a clever hybrid scissor/knife. Not a one-handed knife, alas, but still a keeper.

Leatherman Serac S2
Like Swiss Army and Gerber, Leatherman has jumped on the LED flashlight scene, and they've really done their homework. The single AAA light has a Cree XR-E 7090 LED, two brightness levels (5 and 35 lumens) and always turns on at 5 lumnes, and--get this--sports a clicky switch, so you can operate it comfortably with one hand.

ID Bugaboo Bivy, eVent (in Green!)
Oooooo, la la! Been drooling over this for months, and these never go on sale (and if they do, it's the yellow one). Really can't wait to try this baby out.

I got an AXE for Christmas. No kidding! I wanted a hatchet for backpacking as a companion to my ultralight wilderness ski hut setup, which I featured as one of my staff picks this year (the Ti Goat Vertex 8+ and Ti Stove). It's the little Gerber Backpacker's Axe, 13.5 oz, which means I can chop wood from my sleeping bag :)
