A friend of mine just alerted me to this article. Looks like we might get a workable Giardia vaccine in the not too distant future:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/16/science/16giar.html?_r=1&em
We've had them for dogs for a while now. I'm suprised it's taken this long.
Christopher,What an interesting article. Thanks for passing it on.
What I want to know now is if a Giardia vacccine would really make a difference for backpacking. That is, how much backcountry illness is caused by Giardia vs. other bacteria, viruses, protozoans, etc.?
I think a Giardia vaccine would make a big difference. While the majority of backcountry illness is not Giardia, I think it's likely the majority of serious (as in having to seek treatment) gastrointestinal illness contracted in the backcountry IS Giardia.
