This sucks....I'm planning a trip to the Tetons this August and the Park now requires you to carry a bear canister if you camp below 10,000ft. You can only use canisters that are approved on the parks web-site...the canisters all weigh betwwen 2-3lbs!!! Figgin Fracken...

The following food storage canisters are currently approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee. Grand Teton National Park’s new canister requirement program will authorize the use of any of these and any canisters approved by IGBC. Each of these canisters has been tested in the USFS Missoula lab and at the Grizzly Discovery Center with bears.

I've used the Garcia and the BearVault and prefer the BearVault. They're relatively cheap too...

I don't know if they're approved for the Tetons (they are for the Sierras), but the Bearikade canisters are the lightest I've seen. They're also the most expensive.

And I know that everyone grumbles about bear canisters, but the alternative is that the park rangers have to go out and shoot bears that treat people as food sources (they're not relocating problem bears anymore in a lot of areas). So, for a little extra weight, you're helping to keep bears from being killed. That's worth it to me.

I've tried the Bearikade, Garcia and BearVault. I prefer the BearVault.

The Wild Ideas - Bearikade - site lists rental rates and shipping. $30 -$50 m/l for a 10 day trip.

Hard to guess why the Bearikade is missing from the list, but 1. There's time before next hiking season for it to be added and 2. It's hard to imagine somebody being written up for carrying one in lieu of one of the other containers.

I've used them all but the Bare Boxer, and the Bearikade remains my favorite. The Bearvault is a fine, affordable option and vastly better than the Garcia.

Initially, one would think that anything approved by the SIBBG for use in the Sierras would automatically be approved elsewhere. NOT TRUE.

SIBGG only has to contend with Black Bears, not Grizzly bears, like Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Glacier, and North Cascades NPs must. That requires a different test to gain that certification.

I suspect Bearikade will get there fast.
