The first picture of the green lizard was in Hawaii. Trying to get one of those things to stand still long enough to capture with a regular camera was a pain. Everything else was in ole Virginia during different hikes. I figured posting deer and bear pictures was a little too easy being that I could saddle a couple of them merely in my backyard as they are very populated here in the Old Dominion.

Pine Marten? on 03/29/2010 21:24:20 MDT Print View

Greg,
You may be right. I don't know enough about the animals to tell, but I did read this on the web:

"Biologists estimated that in 1988 there were about 180 pine martens in Wisconsin. They now estimate (as of 1996) that there are 500-1000 martens in Wisconsin, mostly concentrated in the Nicolet and Chequamegon National Forests."

That photo is right in the Nicolet National Forest, so it may very well be a marten! Anyone else know?

Re: Re: Re: Re: UL Creatures on 03/29/2010 21:28:25 MDT Print View

It's hard to tell for sure, but I think that a pine marten is a good guess. It looks too small to be a wolverine, and too large and fat to be a weasel. Too furry to be a river otter. Possibly a mink or a fisher.

Travis, more research!

DNR's response--a mink on 03/30/2010 12:20:20 MDT Print View

"While at first glance it looks somewhat like a marten, and the bright sunlight does make it look lighter colored, I think it probably is a mink. The ears looked small for a marten, and I don't see a yellow throat patch on it. The habitat is also more typical for mink, and marten tend to be in more upland situations. But you are near an area with a good population of martens."

Re: DNR's response--a mink on 03/30/2010 12:30:40 MDT Print View

Excellent. Now you have to accept the challenge to get a close-up photo.

BTW, the state agency is very responsive to get an answer to you that quickly. I've sent inquiries that way to states and the feds, and I typically get a zero response about one month later. Budget cuts, you know.

I was surprised at the response time as well. I did send a thank-you to them because of that.

Luckily, I have a decent chance of getting some more shots of that animal. That picture was taken from a bridge very near our little cabin, and after watching the animal for a few minutes, I believe its home is in a pile of scrub next to the bridge. I'll have to get a shot where the sun isn't directly in the camera's lens!

Bob Gross
(--B.G.--) - F

Locale: Silicon Valley
Re: Re: Re: DNR's response--a mink on 03/30/2010 13:04:37 MDT Print View

Travis, if you go out there to try to photograph the animal, first of all understand that you might never see it. That gets frustrating to some wildlife photographers. Remember the time of day that you saw it, and that is a good time to try again. Many animals like that have a daily routine. If you think you have converged to a den area, then keep some distance, but construct a blind. The Brits call that a hide. But you will want to sit there unseen until the animal comes along again. Then you will want the longest camera lens that you can afford. The smaller the animal, the longer the lens.

I enjoy seeing all of these photos very much, but what would make it even better (for me at least) is if everyone put the camera you are using. It would really help those of us who don't know a huge amount about cameras, because it would let us see what types of shots are capable with what kinds of cameras. Yes, of course photographic skill makes a big difference.

Just a simple model number and brand please!

I love UL because it lets me go farther. Going farther lets me see more of the sort of things in this thread. Let us BPLers help each other capture and share those moments for posterity!

Most people posting here are ultralight backpackers. As such, the use of heavy camera equipment is kind of out of the question for backpacking use. Most people are using a sub-one-pound camera.

I fight that trend. By lightening up my basic backpacking gear, it allows me to carry some good/heavy camera equipment to get the shot. My basic load is 10-11 lbs of base weight, 10-11 lbs of food and expendables, and 10.5 lbs of camera gear.

I was on my way toward Yellowstone, and I decided to take a detour through Boise and then north. You know that you are out in the boonies when Stanley is the population center for miles around, and it has a human population of only 100. Lots of the current Forest Service data on wolverines is coming from the Stanley area, so that's why I set up a night camera rig. Imagine my surprise during the middle of the night when my bell rings that tells me that some intruder is present.

not so fast.. they can also have yellow so pale, it appears white - but it isnt the colors that matter, its the fact that the body rings completely encircle the animal.
and, the Coral snakes around here prove that second statement untrue.

Tawny Frogmouth (Oz) on 04/07/2012 00:56:26 MDT Print View

Tawny Frogmouth
Australian Tawny Frogmouth

We were collecting sawn firewood from a dropped branch at the edge of our farm. We had driven the small tractor and trailer to the tree which had dropped the branch. Loaded the trailer up. Then I looked up and he was sitting there, head pointed upwards pretending to be a dead branch. They do this in the daytime to avoid being seen, and hunt at night. Very silent flight: the mice have no chance. Anyhow, he was about an arm's length away.

So we took our trailer load of firewood and departed. Then we came back for another load, and he was still there. He cracked an eye open when I started the tractor to leave, but otherwise did not move. So I came back later with the camera, and he was still there, still pretending to be a dead branch. He will fly away tonight to hunt.

Cheers

My daughter took these two pictures of a bobcat that was just hanging out in the driveway. It was about 40 yards away. Before it turned and walked away, showing his bobbed tail, we thought it was a small cougar.
This was probably the largest bobcat I have seen. I would guess an older male, from the long white "sideburns".

@ Jay, cool reptile shots.

On your third shot, the one of the close-up of the lizard in your hands, I noticed the lizard has what appears to be an engorged tick attached to its side.

I recall reading that ticks in CA have a significantly lower incidence of carrying lyme disease, partially because the two most common lyme disease carrying ticks in CA are considered to be three-host ticks (which means they feed on three different hosts during their individual life cycles). In their early stages of life (i.e. first host), these two species ticks mostly feed on lizards and rodents.

If the lizard the ticks feeds on during it's first host stage is a Western Fence lizard, the tick will lose all of its lyme disease-causing bacteria. Apparently there is something in the blood of Western Fence Lizards that kills the lyme disease but allows the tick to survive and continue on otherwise unharmed.

Anyway, I saw your photo and thought I'd share that interesting bit of info. Seems we have reptiles to thank, at least partially, for our lower rate of lyme disease in CA compared to other parts of the U.S.

Jason, lemurs only live in Madagascar. That's a Coati, which are related to raccoons. The various species range from AZ all the way through the Amazon. They're quite entertaining and can sometimes be seen in troops of 50 or so.

This isn't the animal, but the tracks of the animal. For scale, the lens cap is 3.1 inches in diameter, so that makes the paw print maybe 2.5 inches. The mud was sticky and fresh, and I believe that the prints were about twelve hours old. The pine needles are about eight hours old due to wind. This was Friday at an obscure lake in Yosemite where almost nobody goes.

mountain lion tracks

Mountain Lion, perhaps a young one. We heard a coyote chorus three times during the night. The prints are too large for a coyote.

Jay, I understand. The prints were too large for a bobcat and too small for a mountain lion. Due to the vegetation, I could not see any other prints behind or ahead, so I could not measure the stride. I have seen a bobcat at this same lake once, but that was over 25 years ago, so it doesn't mean much. I did not have materials with me to make a print mold.

I just wish that I had gotten an audio recording of the three sessions of coyote chorus at around Oh-dark-thirty.

I saw my first wolverines last week while hiking in the Elk Lakes Provincial Park in the Southern Canadian Rockies. Shortly after I crossed over a high mountain pass and started dropping down the other side, I spotted them racing up the talus and snow heading for the pass I had just crossed. I had enough time to take a couple of photos. Snow and wind were blowing directly in my face as I took the photos but they still turned out alright. Definitely a very special moment for me.

Mountain Lions are definitely very wary. I have seen 2 in my lifetime but none in the past 20 years.

And yes, the wolverine sighting is quite a rare one. I feel very fortunate for that experience!

I also saw my first wolf this year. That along with 8 grizzly bears, nearly 100 mountain goats (including a single group of 39), and dozens of sheep. I have spent more time in the mountains this year than any other year of my life. All in all a very good year for seeing wild creatures.
