I;m new to here and the sport. I have decided on new sleeping bag - and have narrowed it to two choices. Most of my camping has been car - I have a 20 degree REI bag that I'm giving to my daughter ;)

I'm swaying between a super stretch 30 degree 800 down Mont-bell and the REI Subkilo 20. My main concern is my wriggling at night! I like to have my knees out to the side , lay on my side etc. Thoughts on tem ratings?

John,

I own both an REI Subkilo 20 and a Mont-bell SS#2 long. The insulation in both bags is comparable. The fixed shoulder girth on the Subkilo is 57" and the SS#2 is 75" fully stretched. The SS#2 is dramatically more comfortable if you tend to have a large frame and move around in your sleep.

I was considering the SS#3 and I'm 5'5, 135lb...... the coolest I think I'll be is at 4-6k, below snowline, for a day, maybe 2... not for long hauls... just the odd weekend 'up in the San Bernadino mountains, or a spring trip to yosemite etc... always in a tent

John,

I had a SS#3 and it was seriously lacking down in some of the baffles. I had trouble keeping it warm to its rating without some serious layering and I am a warm sleeper (eat before I go to bed, am hydrated, etc).

I will ask that if you need the SS based on your size? I would probably look toward something with less girth to maintain heat better. Just a thought.

I was looking at it because of my experience with an REI mummy i have. It seemed restrictive around the legs which I am led to believe (or trying to confirm) is not the case with this SS style. I just don't like sleeping like a plank and tend to prefer my side or front rather than on my back.
