do you think this would make for a good backpacking shoe for either short or long trips with weight up to 25 lbs?

Of the Montrail line I would suggest you look at the Hardrock. The CTC model would likely get the job done but is designed to be more of an approach shoe and performance is best on rock. The Hardrock is an all terrian hiking / packing trail runner. Later this fall you should see a Hardrock Mid that may suit your needs best.

There are other brands than Montrail that offer excellent choices but IMHO you can not go wrong selecting the Hardrock.

Hi there,

I have the CTC and the hardrock...

I would actually say the CTC is a better allround hiking/walking shoe. It is really comfy and breathable. The sole copes with quite a few surfaces although not great on wet rock. The hardrock is better for wet rock than the ctc (for me anyway).

I have been using the same pair of CTCs for 18months and wear them all the time....as in I drive in them, go to work in them, go hiking in them. They are starting to show signs of wear and tear but thats to be expected after 18months of continual use! I use the hardrocks where I know grip is more of an issue

both are good and the main reason I love Montrails is the fit around the ankle and the fact they do half sizes (I have wide feet). I have tried other manufacturers but they just dont compare with Montrails for fit
