One of the most interesting things I learned from Trailjournals was just how mny long distance trails there were.

Al Gore invented this thing called the web browser for his intarweb. Once you find one that works, try "gis appalachian trail" or something that applies to your specific location of interest. There are lots of results for the example posted.
