Glad SimplyCooking Microwave Steaming Bags on 07/14/2008 13:29:35 MDT Print View

Anyone try THESE for freezer bag meals on the trail? They stand up, the tops can be pealed off when your are ready to eat, and they are manufacturer approved for heating food in them... Cost $0.30 per bag. Nice...

brian, i actually use them as my insurance bag for freezer bag cooking. i use the cheaper bags as my cooking bag, then place the meal in the glad steamer bag, which is alittle heavier. if the inner bag gets a leak, it doesn't ruin my cozy....

So they weigh more than say a zip lock freezer bag (i.e. 0.25 ounces)?

i guess i'm not so much worried about the wt. as i am the cost. they are alittle bigger than the glad freezer bags, so it is possiable that they are a tad heavier. will have to weigh them both when i get home.....

OK, Brian. here's the scope. i was wrong about the simply cooking bags being a tad heavier. the glad simply cooking microwave bags have 10 per box. the glad freezer bags have 40 per box. they are both 1 quart. on my scale they both weigh the same...1/4 oz. i can't remember what i paid for either, but i can guarantee the freeze bags are a whole lot cheaper....hence the use of the simply cooking bags as insurance. i also use the pint size. for my special oatmeal that i make..don't need the qt.sz. hope this helps you....vicky

Quite heavy duty they are - pricier though. But...if you look at it, for an average trip it doesn't add much more cost.

I started making a cozy specifically for the steamer bags this year due to a request and it is now a best seller.

Btw, the steamer bags work well for couples as they hold more food.

Do these bags have the little steam vent holes in the upper corners of the bag (I guess they would have to)? I had some Glad bags (I don’t know the type) that have the holes, and they are great for leaking dry quinoa all over the bottom of my food bag. The holes are so small I didn’t see them until I started manipulating the bag full of HOT water.
For an insurance bag, this wouldn’t be a problem, but for food storage, it is quite troublesome.

I wouldn't recommend the steamer bags for storage. That is where I'd use Glad sandwich bags (very heavy duty!) or freezer bags instead :-)

ZipLock Zip 'N Steam on 07/19/2008 18:27:25 MDT Print View

I was at Target and they had the SimplyCooking Bags on sale. Down the row they also had another option from ZipLock called Zip'N Steam. I think they were 10 for $2.50. They don't look to have open holes for venting.
