Savvy shoppers in Seattle know and love the bargain basement/scratch and dent/gear garage at the flagship REI--it is a perpetual "garage sale" (minus the greedy throngs of people) full of returned, damaged or mis-packaged gear and seasonally culled rental fleet equipment. A longtime employee informed me that a decision has been made to eliminate this "eyesore" effective in two to three years so let me implore anyone who loves this department to at least take the time to fill out a comment card (available at the store) voicing your protest.

Eyesore in the basement? Who really cares? We certainly don't.But to REI, it's just their corporate mentality hell bent on maximizing profits. Hey, basement is space. Space is money. We need to stock more high-margin softshells there!
