I've got a couple dollars left over from the Stimulus Check. Anything cool I should check out?

How about Under Armor basketball/workout ... on 06/04/2008 12:53:43 MDT Print View

shorts? Or similar shorts from one of the competitiors like Russell, Nike or Adidas?
They are not superlight but they are light, way breathable, and there is plenty of room in 'em.
I'm 6-0, 212, with a 36-inch waist, and close-set strong upper thighs, and the "L" was more than sufficient.
I'm not a name brand kind of guy, but I've been wanting to give that type of fabric a workout ...

I really like the Rail Riders Sawtooth Mountain shorts. Light, durable and even has back pockets and belt loops! Limited colors, green is the darkest.

I recently picked up a pair of REI San Juan Water Shorts for an upcoming trip through The Narrows at Zion. Although the trip isn't for four more weeks, I've been using them for all of my hiking for the past two months, and love them.

Patagonia Ultra Shorts on 06/04/2008 15:23:42 MDT Print View

The Patagonia Ultra Shorts are great. They will wet out very fast but will dry almost as fast. I use them for running so I really can't comment on the durability.

I have not used them for backpacking 'cause out in the woods I am an underwear wearer and they have a built in brief.

The simple velcro pockets are numerous but not very deep, perfect for some Gu or a set of keys.

5.11 shorts on 06/04/2008 17:16:26 MDT Print View

I nominate a pair of nylon canvas Tactical shorts by "5.11". These shorts are a far better deal for the money than Railriders shorts - and with more features. The nylon "canvas" feels like cotton but is much tougher and, of course, dries fast. Be SURE you ae ordering the nylon version as they make it in cotton also. The company primarily sells to law enforcement and they have excellent quality with very reasonable prices.

Just GOOGLE <5.11 clothing> and you'll get the website. I
have the same thing in a long pant and for the desert southwest they are very durable and and provide great protection from sharp desert plants, which are 99% of plants in the desert.

for the nicest check out beyond fleece on 06/05/2008 16:52:14 MDT Print View

they will make a custom pair just for you out of what you want.
EDIT:
Or so they used to, I just checked them out and they still make custom stuff, but you can't specify the weight anymore it seems.

I cut out Ultra's liners and just wear sports boxers underneath - works well for me. The pockets suck, but the shorts do dry out very quickly.

The Ultra is expensive though. If I could do it again, I would look for a cheaper alternative.
