Andrew Skurka spoke in Mpls today on Avoiding Blisters -- Interesting Advice on 04/27/2008 00:04:00 MDT Print View

Sorry for double post, first posting was in reply to a Review not a Forum post (but I thought it was a forum post--I stumbled upon the link via Google so coming in the side door, I was temporarily confused what I was replying to.)

Andrew Skurka spoke in Minneapolis today at the Outdoor Expo and I took down his notes on foot care and found some links, including this thread.

He recommends shoes that keep your feet cool (he uses the GoLite Trail (Sun Dragon I believe based upon viewing the shoes online just now) Running Shoes that breath well), street hiking (not the heavier duty) biker wool socks (by Defeet), plus the use of Hydropel (sold by BPL), LuekoTape and if a split of the foot skin occurs, Krazy Glue. I found some interesting links:

Anybody used Avon Basics Silicone Glove cream as a much cheaper hydropel replacement?

John Vonhof
"You might try a fairly cheap fix. AVON sells a big tube of AVON Basics Silicone Glove Hand Cream for abouyt 3.00. The silicone might be a better and longer lasting lubricant than the thicker Bag Balm or Udderbalm. The phone book should show your local AVON sales rep. or try 1-800-FOR-AVON. This is also a great lubricant for one's feet. Some use it as is and others use it over a base of tincture of benzoin or similar skin toughener. I have three tubes of the stuff. Works for me."

Other mentions of the cream on feet:

John do you know what percentage of dimethicone is in the avon cream? In hydropel it is 30%. If it was close to that it might work. Every hand cream that I have seen with dimethicone in it was 2% or 3% at most. Last year when hydropel was not availible I thought about trying to find a source of dimethicone and making my own hydropel but I could not find one.

Stuart, the dimethicone percentage is not shown online. Online I read that the most dimethicone in a formulation is about 15%. Does one really need upwards of 30% to work? Is that 30% even true or is it manipulated?--Skeptic Shannon
