Baby name ideas? on 04/01/2008 14:39:20 MDT Print View

My daughter is going to be born very soon. Just wanted to see if anyone had any good ones? Preferably outdoor oriented, maybe give a reason or maybe its your daughters name? We have a few in mind, but really have no clue. Just thought it would be interesting to see what everyone else suggests.

Daughter names... on 04/01/2008 14:49:59 MDT Print View

I want to name my daughter Denali. I've talked to the wife about it, and she seemed semi-OK with it. I don't know if she realizes I'm serious though.

Denali is a good one. I have had hunter in my mind but dont really know if a unisex name is the way we want to go. guess when I hear or read it I will know.

Everest Basecamp Cadorin has a good ring to it....but I think thats more of a boys name lol.

I've always liked Shenandoah, and it also could be Shannon for short

The most beautiful sounding words in the English language "Cellar Door".

Either that or Dyneema.

Hunter? Fisher? Trapper? Lunar Tarptent Six Moon???? I named my first son Hunter and we were going to name our second son Fisher or Trapper, but we changed our mind and went with a family name. Good luck...

Eh, I named mine Ford. He has been fine with it for the past decade.

But.... on a serious side? It takes a strong kid to carry an unusual name. My kid will always stand out due to his name. The kid is going to bear that name for their life. My kids full name is a tongue twister so his first name does fit in with it. But..if you are Mr. Smith...calling your kid Denali Smith is well, flat sounding.

PS regarding nice-sounding english words, I always like "woodsmoke." Or is that two words?

For a baby name, though, don't pick anything *too* weird. The kids with weird names always stand out.

I went to school with a William (Willy) Dick Woods. Not a good start on life.

wow.. that is a pretty cool name Andrew. Silvestra is a feminine of Silvester? regardless. I like it.

We named our daughter Sierra Rose. Both names are "outdoorsy" and the combination of a somewhat unique first name with a more traditional middle name allows her to choose, later in life, to be called either one. I also know someone who named three of their daughters Sierra, Savannah, and Shasta.

For a boy... on 04/02/2008 10:19:36 MDT Print View

I asked my wife yesterday about "Summit" if we had a boy. She didn't like it. I think Denali is still on though.

There is always Whitney. Or K2 (boy or girl). :)

When I lived in Glacier Park there were a number of folks living there who had named their kids after various landmarks within the park that meant something special to them. I remember a time a group of us was kidding around that one of the future children should be named after the only unclimbed rock feature in the park, Lithoid Cusp.

I was thinking:
Tora, as in Tora Bora (its a cave system in Afghanistan, and also the name of a dune complex in a Desert I work in). I just like the sound of it, but it means Tiger in japanese, and black dust (tora bora) in arabic (i think).

Maireana. (Genus of a chenopod, arid zone plant...bluebush/blackbush etc). (pronounced Marry-arna, though Im sure you yanks will say that differently too, imagine an aussie accent if you will)

Acacia. (genus of arid zone tree/shrub)

Alectryon. (another genus...bullock bush...dont tell her the common name!).
Atalaya.(genus, cattle bush, same goes...)

*sigh* one day I might get to choose baby names.
