A question for everyone. What is the most you have paid for one piece of backpacking gear? I paid $220 for a Western Mountaineering Sleeping bag once, but I know I might be the cheapskate here.

So how much?

Well, I bought a Marmot Hydrogen bag last year - fine bag but damned expensive, especially when things get converted to Canadian dollars.

Easily the most that I ever paid for a piece of Backpacking equipment was my over $780? Custom made 5.5 lb, 420 HT/Full Spectra, 5000 cu inch main compartment, Panel Loading, Critical Mass McHale Backpack. Superb craftsmanship and carries at least 50+ pounds of backpacking equipment, food, water, and camera equipment comfortably.

I paid US $700 for a Garmin Handheld GPS unit. Definately my biggest outlay but I use it all the time, so I don't regret the expense.

Cameras don't count, right? Whew!

It's got to be my WM Dakota Dryloft bag with overfill. I conveniently can't recall the toll, but today it's $560 w/o the overkill, er, overfill.

This thread could become a backcountry confessional, so let's make a solemn pact: no spouses!

$359 for a Marmot Helium bag. I was really tired of freezing on those few winter campouts with my sons' Scout troop. But the pain was eased by spending the REI dividend built up with the credit card. Really nice bag.
