SuperCat stove users? on 11/29/2007 11:43:41 MST Print View

All you SuperCat stove users out there...

I bought a cool old Whitney punch a while back and made a few SuperCat alcohol stoves based on the ZenStoves diagram. And now I want to start using one.

I have a 0.9L Evernew pot that I typically use with a canister stove, but I want to use a smaller volume pot with the SuperCat for the most compact cooking setup I can make. 0.9L is usually overkill for a SUL 1-2 day trip. I know the SuperCat works best with a wider pot, but...

Any suggestions for an approximately 0.7L titanium pot that would work well with a SuperCat alcohol stove? I'd prefer one with handles.

And any other suggestions about using a SuperCat in the field?

Thanks!

Hey Dave, I used my supercat with a MSR Titan kettle with good success. I don't know the volume if the kettle off hand but it would seem close to your needs. The stove is dead simple to use, but a windscreen is mandatory for field conditions.

the msr titan kettle is 0.85L so it's almost the same as my Evernew 0.9L, though I like the taller shape of the MSR.

i'm looking for something in the 0.6L (perhaps) or 0.7L (most likely) range. just enough for some ramen or a mac n' che!

a snowpeak 600 or 700? any other options? BPL firelite pots?

I've used one with a SP 700. You get some flame coming up the sides of the pot, so its not perfectly efficient but it will boil water no problem. That's normally the set I take when group hiking, since its relatively foolproof and reliable.

REI had the Evernew .8 ti kettle on sale last week for $35.00. It had handles as I recall and would seem to be a good match for an alcohol stove. Not as wide as the grease pot or Evernew .9 pot but just wide enough to catch most of the flame and heat for an efficient water boiler.

The Evernew tea kettle is a possibility, since it's wide and short. It's 0.8L so it's not a whole lot smaller than my Evernew 0.9L already though. I kinda like it though. I wish it was 0.7L instead (then maybe I could justify buying it!).

Maybe I just shouldn't worry about it, but I'm trying to not only lighten everything up in my kit, but also get as small as possible (just did a 3 day trip in a GoLite Ion, but with no cooking).

If you put a big dent in it you can probably get it down to .7L :-)

Titanium's siren call is powerful indeed.

Or take a Dremel to it. Then there would be a weight savings involved as well :P.

Snowpeak STW-001T on 11/29/2007 16:05:56 MST Print View

Dave,

What you're after is the Snowpeak STW-001T. If you do a search of the forums, you will come up with individual weights and volumes, but it includes a 560ml and 750ml pot. Both are bowl rather than mug shaped with handles.

This little beauty will run you RRP$40 for the whole set.

Regards, Rod

Thanks Rod... that's a definite possibility. A good deal for three items, though I would never use a frying pan / lid. But with a aluminum foil lid, those two bowl-shaped pots might be nice... room for the side-burner SuperCat to heat the bottom well.
