FS: Western Mountaineering Flight Vest on 11/27/2007 15:46:55 MST Print View

I've changed my mind again about this vest and have decided not to keep it. A primaloft vest works better for me. Size medium. Purchased about 1 month ago, used a few times. Like new condition.

$100 shipped.

How is the fit? Typical medium sizing or a bit larger?

re: fit on 11/27/2007 17:50:13 MST Print View

I'm 5'10", 145 lbs and typically wear a medium (in Patagonia, Icebreaker, Smartwool, and Mountain Hardwear, for example, a medium shirt fits me perfectly). I tried on the large Flight jacket and I was swimming in it. The medium flight vest, however, is a very good fit--not tight, but there's not a lot of dead air space between the vest and my body.

I think I read that the Flight series vests are supposed to fit like a fleece vest, which means it's not intended to be worn with a puffy layer underneath it.

WM Vest ? on 11/28/2007 08:02:55 MST Print View

I have noticed that your zipper tag is different from what is pictured on the WM website (notice the red lettering):

Would you kindly tell me where the vest was purchased ?

Patrick,
The tag looks different because it's flipped backwards in my first photo. Here's some close ups of the tags, which for some reason didn't show up in my original photo. I bought it from Backcountry Gear. Another thing you may have noticed is that in my original photo the trim on the hand warmer pockets and arm holes looks white; whereas in person it doesn't look white. It is really black in appearance, but the material has reflective properties so the flash on my camera makes it look bright white.

new asking price on 11/28/2007 21:01:09 MST Print View

Changed my mind about the asking price. $120 really is too much to ask for something that costs $160 new, isn't it? I was thinking it's in like new condition and all, but then I remembered that the gear swap is about deals. $100 shipped sound a little better?

Hi,

Would it be long enough if you were 3" taller? That's where I am! Being thin I often fall in between M & L sizes.

Thanks, Todd

3" taller on 12/09/2007 17:03:48 MST Print View

Hmm, that probably depends on where the extra height is compared to on me (legs or torso or both), but my guess is that the medium would be borderline too short for you. It's cut so the bottom hem comes down to about 3"-4" below my beltline.

How warm is this vest? What temps should it be considered for?

I don't think I really need it, but for heaven's sake, you shouldn't have this much trouble selling a WM item!

If it's around a temp range I could see myself being in, than I'll grab it up for ya!

Don't think you need to buy it just for pity's sake, Andrew. There are actually several watchers for this listing who will maybe be last minute biddders.

As for the temperature range, I'll try. Wearing a midweight baselayer and the flight vest, and sitting around not really moving, I'm good down to the 40s. Below that and my arms get cold. If I add a windshirt, though, it's comfortable down to the 30s. Add in a little activity, like walking around doing camp chores, and it's good a bit below that.

heh...oh no, I wouldn't buy it out of pity! I've been tempted by it since day one and it's coming to a point where I can save up a bit and just get it!

It's a great piece of gear and I imagine I would find a way to use it! I expected it to be warmer, but I'm happy to hear it isn't for temps that I usually don't experience!

The two-layer loft is almost exactly 3". I can't say if my above temperature estimates will hold true for you because I really haven't used the vest too much or in a very wide range of conditions, but according to this article, 1.5" of single layer loft yeilds an approximate temperature rating of 40 degrees, of course YMMV.

Aww...just missed it! I checked with 1 minute left and I had to sign up for an account in that time because I forgot my old info. I guess I couldn't type fast enough!

Oh well! :/
