I haven't seen anyone mentioning bear spray on their gear lists for the JMT. Is this because they're just black bears and are unlikely to attack without provocation? Or would you recommend bear spray?

You wont need bear spray for the sierras, there are only black bears. you will need a bear canister or Ursack with aluminum liner.
